Choosing the Best Unlimited Data Plan

If you’re shopping for an unlimited data plan, you may be surprised by how many options are available. Unfortunately, not all unlimited plans offer the same features for the same price. So it’s important to know what your priorities are when it comes to an unlimited cell phone plan.

Cheap unlimited plans available from prepaid carriers and MVNOs (including Mint, Boost and Visible) offer limited high-speed data. This means data will slow based on congestion. Still, they do provide unlimited data with some of the lowest prices you’ll find. Unlimited plans from major carriers come with slightly higher prices but offer much more high-speed data or unlimited data with no speed restrictions at all.

In addition to the amount of high-speed data, unlimited plans differ in the features they offer. If you’re looking for an unlimited hotspot plan, prepaid plan or HD video streaming, be sure to read the fine print before you choose a plan to ensure you get the features you want.

Below, you’ll find my top picks for the best unlimited data plans:

Cheapest Unlimited Data Plans

While you may need unlimited data, the overall price is still a factor to consider. Many MVNOs that run on the towers of major networks offer unlimited data plans for a fraction of the cost of the major carriers. Mint and Boost offer 40GB and 30GB of high-speed data (respectively) each month before speeds slow, while Visible offers unlimited data with reduced data speed during congestion. These plans also include SD video streaming and limited hotspot features.

If you’re simply looking for the best cheap phone plan that doesn’t charge for data overages, these are great options to consider:

Visible

Cheapest Unlimited Data Plan Overall

If you’re looking for the cheapest unlimited data plan, it’s hard to beat Visible. For $25 per month, you can get unlimited talk, text and data with no data cap. Still, speeds may be reduced during congestion. The plan includes unlimited mobile hotspot data, but speeds are capped at 5 Mbps and it’s limited to one device. The plan also includes unlimited mobile data, and you can expect download speeds between 9-149 Mbps. If you need faster data or hotspot, you can opt for Visible+. The $45 per month plan includes 50GB of premium high-speed data and access to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network. Plus, mobile hotspot speeds are twice as fast.

To save even more, you may be able to bring your own phone to Visible. Check your phone’s compatibility online before switching. I tried out Visible myself before recommending the carrier, and you can read my full review here to learn more about Visible.

Other Plans to Consider:

  • Mint Mobile (Review), a T-Mobile MVNO, offers the Mint Unlimited plan for $30/month. It includes unlimited talk, text and data as well as 10GB of hotspot data and 40GB of high-speed mobile data. After 40GB, speeds reduce, but you can continue using unlimited data.
  • Tello Mobile (Review) also runs on T-Mobile’s network. Tello recently updated its plan selection and pricing to include a monthly unlimited option for $25. The $25 plan includes 35GB of high-speed data before reduced speeds as well as 5GB of mobile hotspot.

Boost Mobile

Cheapest Unlimited Annual Plan

If you’re willing to commit to a phone plan for a full year, Boost Mobile’s unlimited plan is one of the cheapest overall options. However, I tested Boost Mobile myself earlier this year and found that this plan was available only for certain phones. If you’re thinking about switching to this plan for its low price, make sure you check your phone’s eligibility in person or plan on buying a new one.

The plan costs $300 upfront for a full year of service, which works out to $25 per month before taxes and fees. For that price, you’ll get unlimited calls, texts and data. The plan includes 30GB of high-speed data and unlimited data at slower speeds after 30GB. You can also share your data via a mobile hotspot.

This is one of Boost Mobile’s new “carrier crusher” plans that run on AT&T’s network. If you’re thinking about switching to Boost Mobile, you may be able to bring your own phone with you, but be ready for a $25 activation fee if you do. While you can check your phone’s eligibility online, I highly recommend having it checked in person first.

Before you switch to Boost Mobile, be sure to read my full review to find out why it’s a great option for some but not for others.

Note that I recommend trying any new carrier for at least a month before purchasing a full-year plan.

Visible

Cheapest Unlimited Hotspot Plan

Visible was listed above as the cheapest unlimited data plan overall. It also offers the cheapest price for unlimited hotspot.

Visible is a prepaid carrier that runs on Verizon’s towers.

Best Unlimited Data Plans From Major Carriers

If you need high-speed data that’s truly unlimited (or a phone plan with a much higher data cap) consider a plan from a major carrier. T-Mobile Magenta Max and AT&T Unlimited Premium offer high-speed data that never slows and 40GB-60GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data, respectively. T-Mobile also offers the Essentials Saver plan, which includes 50GB of premium data before unlimited 5G/4G LTE speeds at an excellent price from a major carrier.

For an unlimited data plan with these great features, consider one of the following:

T-Mobile Magenta Max

Best Truly Unlimited Data Plan

If you’re looking for a completely unlimited data plan with high-speed access that never slows, T-Mobile Magenta Max is worth looking into. For $85 per month for one line, it includes unlimited talk, text and 5G data. It also includes 40GB of 4G LTE mobile hotspot data and a basic Netflix subscription.

Other plans from T-Mobile begin as low as $50 per month for the Essentials Saver plan which includes unlimited talk, text and data with reduced speeds after 50GB.

You may also be able to bring your own phone instead of having to buy a new one. Before you switch to T-Mobile, be sure to check your phone’s eligibility online.

AT&T Unlimited Premium

Best Hotspot Unlimited Data Plan

AT&T offers a few different unlimited data plans, but the only one that’s truly unlimited with no data cap or slowed speeds is the Unlimited Premium plan. For $85.99 per month for one line, AT&T offers unlimited talk, text and high-speed data that never slows. It also includes 60GB of mobile hotspot.

For a cheaper AT&T unlimited data plan, consider Unlimited Extra for $75.99 per month for one line; it includes 50GB of high-speed data before slowed speeds and 30GB of mobile hotspot per line per month.

Before you switch to an AT&T plan, check your phone’s compatibility to see if you can bring it with you to save even more money.

T-Mobile Essentials Saver

Best Value From a Main Carrier

T-Mobile’s Essentials Saver plan is a limited-time postpaid unlimited option. The plan includes all the perks of T-Mobile Essentials for a slightly lower price. One line costs $50 per month with autopay (plus taxes and fees). You can also get two lines for $80 or three to four lines for $100. That’s a great deal on a family phone plan!

The plan itself includes unlimited talk, text and 5G / 4G LTE data. You’ll also get 50GB of premium data and unlimited 3G mobile hotspot.

Before you switch to T-Mobile, be sure to check your phone’s eligibility online.

Best Unlimited Hotspot Data Plan

Unlimited mobile data is great for using your phone when you aren’t connected to Wi-Fi. If you don’t have Wi-Fi at home or if you regularly need to share your data with other devices, you’ll want a plan that offers a significant amount of high-speed mobile hotspot data. While not many plans offer truly unlimited high-speed hotspot data, several offer high data caps on hotspot sharing followed by unlimited hotspot data at reduced speeds.

Here are my top picks for the best unlimited data plans with excellent hotspot features.

The Best Unlimited Hotspot Data Plans:

  • AT&T Unlimited Premium offers a similar deal with unlimited talk, text and data plus 50GB of high-speed hotspot data for $85 per month for one line. After 50GB, speeds will be reduced to 128Kbps, but you’ll still have unlimited access.
  • T-Mobile Magenta Max offers unlimited talk, text and data plus 40GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data for $85 per month for one line. After 40GB, you’ll still have access to unlimited 3G hotspot data.
  • Visible (Review) offers unlimited hotspot data for $25 per month for one line, but you won’t get any high-speed or premium data. Mobile hotspot speeds are limited to 5Mpbs. If you need faster data or hotspot, you can opt for Visible+. The $45 per month plan includes 50GB of premium high-speed data and access to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network. Plus, mobile hotspot speeds are twice as fast.

Other Plans To Consider:

  • Consumer Cellular (Review) offers 50GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data (used from your monthly high-speed mobile data allotment) for $50 per month for one line.
  • Boost Mobile (Review) offers an Unlimited Plus plan with 30GB of mobile hotspot data for $60 per month for one line.

Best Unlimited Prepaid Phone Plans

Prepaid phone plans are another option to consider. With a prepaid phone plan, you won’t need a credit check and you’ll pay for only what you use.

Here are my top picks for the best unlimited prepaid phone plans.

The Best Unlimited Prepaid Phone Plans:

  • Tello Mobile (Review) offers unlimited talk, text and data for $25 per month with a high-speed data cap of 35GB per month. After you’ve reached your monthly data limit, you’ll still have access to unlimited data at reduced speeds.
  • Mint Unlimited (Review) is a phone plan that allows you to prepay for the first three months of service and then prepay for annual service to keep the same low price. This plan includes unlimited talk, text and data for $30 per month. After 40GB of premium data, speeds will reduce.

Other Plans To Consider:

  • H2O Wireless (Review) offers a prepaid phone plan that includes unlimited talk, text and data for $45 per month. You’ll have access to high-speed data up to 40GB before slowed speeds.
  • Boost Mobile (Review) offers an unlimited phone plan that allows you to prepay for a year in advance. This plan includes unlimited talk, text and data for $300 for 12 months, which works out to be $25 per month before taxes and fees. After 35GB of premium data, speeds will reduce. However, not all phones are eligible for this plan despite what Boost Mobile’s online tools says.
  • T-Mobile Simply Prepaid offers unlimited talk, text and data for $50 per month with a high-speed data cap of 50GB. After you’ve reached the premium data limit, you’ll still have access to unlimited data at reduced speeds.
  • AT&T Prepaid Unlimited is available for $50 per month with unlimited talk, text and data. Note that speeds may slow with congestion.
  • Verizon Prepaid Unlimited Plus also includes unlimited talk, text and data with speeds that slow during congestion for $60 per month.

For the cheapest available unlimited data plan, check out Visible. For a cheap unlimited plan with a significant amount of high-speed data and mobile hotspot, consider Mint Mobile. If you need truly unlimited high-speed data on a single line, T-Mobile’s Magenta Max is the most expensive option, but it will definitely meet your needs.

Here’s what you need to know about my top picks for the best unlimited data plans for one person.

Best Unlimited Data Plans for Two

If you’re shopping for unlimited data for two lines, you may be able to get a discount on an unlimited phone plan. Visible is a great multiline phone plan that offers unlimited data and two lines for $25 each per month. T-Mobile Essentials Saver is another great option at $40 per line per month for 50GB of premium data. If you need truly unlimited data, high-speed hotspot and/or HD video streaming, T-Mobile’s Magenta Max may be worth $70 per line per month.

  • T-Mobile Essentials Saver also includes unlimited talk, text and data for $40 per line for two lines. With this plan, you’ll get 50GB of premium data before reduced speeds. It also includes 40GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data and high-definition streaming. While the price isn’t the cheapest, the features and perks of this plan make it a great option.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to choosing the best unlimited data plan, it’s important to know what features and perks you need other than a lot of data. You can find cheap unlimited plans from MVNOs that run on major networks’ towers as well as completely unlimited plans directly from one of the major networks. If you need a high allotment of mobile hotspot data or HD video streaming, be sure to choose an unlimited plan with these features.

If you are looking for the cheapest price on unlimited data with a prepaid provider, Visible is available for $25 per month with unlimited data. For a truly unlimited data plan with hotspot and HD video streaming, T-Mobile Magenta Max is hard to beat at $85 per month for one line.
