Destination: San Juan, Puerto Rico
About this photo: Exploring Castillo de San Felipe del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It’s much bigger and in more picturesque setting than Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, Florida.
Best deal found: Flying the very first weekend of December has 2 perks: 1) the hurricane season is over, so the rain showers are short and sporadic, 2) it’s the last weekend of low season which translates into airline and hotel deals

Destination: Antiqua, Guatemala
About this photo: Downtown square in Antiqua. Old buildings surround the square. Volcano in background. Beautiful area.

Destination: Klamath, CA
About this photo: My husband, Rick, and I were riding through the mountains surrounding Klamath. The day was misty and foggy. We happened on this field of wildflowers. I thought it was beautiful the way the fog/mist made a perfect back-drop for the the vivid colors of the flowers. My husband Rick is pictured in their midst.
Best deal found: We RV and found a scheduled RV place right on the banks of the Klamath River. They had a wonderful “BBQ” one night of grilled salmon that was caught that morning! The “BBQ” was all you could eat grilled salmon, chicken, salads, potatoes and other foods. We sat around the campfire eating and topped the night off with toasted marshmallows! All for $8 per person.

About this photo: This billboard, translated as “SOCIALISM OR DEATH” is in Havana, Cuba… We drove past it after leaving the Havana airport. It set the tone for the 3 week trip in Cuba where we found food shortages (including no salt or black beans- and where our daily diet consisted of rice, tomatoes & fried bananas), as well as other shortages (no toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.) I almost got in trouble with the Cuban security for translating between some American tourists and a Cuban meteorologist (about Hurricane Mitchell) and where my kids and I were almost not let out of the country because we were given the wrong visa when we entered.
Best deal found: Flight from SC to Fort Lauderdale FL via Spirit airlines was only 33 dollars for each of us! And the rental car (priceline) from the Fort Lauderdale airport to the Miami airport was only 35. Much cheaper than flying directly to Miami.

Destination: Paris, France
About this photo: This is a photo of one of the many metro stations in old Paris.
Best deal found: We purchased this trip on “super sale” from British Airways, 6 months in advance. The trip was $1000 each, including air and lodging for 6 nights. We went with another couple to further share costs (transportation, meals, entertainment)…we used the metro instead of taxis, ate the ‘free’ breakfast available at the hotel, and used our Capital One credit card that had no international fees. Overall our trip for 2, from California(SFO) to Paris for six nights, cost $2900. What a deal!

Destination: Santiago, Chile
About this photo: On March 6, 2010 we visited Santiago’s second highest peak and the city’s largest park called Cerro San Cristobal. At the summit there is the beautiful white statue of the Virgin Mary at its peak which can be seen for many miles. The statue was donated by France in the 1920’s. In the amphitheater just below the statue, Pope John Paul II celebrated mass in 1987 . The picture was taken shortly after the big Chilean earthquake. There was no damage to the monument. nor the park. The photo was taken around noon when the sun was shining just in the right place to make a dramatic memory.
Best deal found: We stayed three nights at the Hotel Orly in Santiago for a total of $375 which included a full buffet breakfast. It was great location near great restaurants, shopping and public transportation. The Subway System was a steal at 400 pesos which is equal to 76 cents in US Money. It is modern, clean, safe and a train comes every few minutes and goes everywhere in the city.
