TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

5 Things You Didn’t Know About New Year’s Eve
MarketResearch.com has compiled a list of the five most interesting facts about the New Year’s holiday to guide and educate travelers during the year-end festivities:
1. The top three places in the U.S. to visit and celebrate New Year’s Eve are Las Vegas, Disney World, and New York City. Airbnb has more than one million reservations on New Year’s Eve, 2015, including approximately 47,000 reservations in New York City alone.
2. The biggest international celebration is in Sydney, Australia. This celebration includes more than 80,000 fireworks set off over Sydney Harbour Bridge, with more than 1 million people in attendance to watch the show!

3. More than 360 million glasses of sparkling wine are consumed during the holiday season, and it’s the biggest day for champagne consumption.
4. Only 50% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, and 25% of those give up their resolutions by the second week in January. The top New Year’s resolutions include losing weight, eating healthier, exercising more, quitting smoking, sticking to a budget, saving money, getting more organized, finding a better job, and being a better person.
5.  Not all celebrations end happily. More vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Take a Hike on New Year’s Day!
America’s State Parks encourage people to get off the couch and get outdoors on the first day of 2016.
On New Year’s Day, hundreds of free, guided hikes will be organized in all 50 states. Last year nearly 28,000 people rang in the New Year, collectively hiking over 66,000 miles throughout the country!
First Day Hikes are led by knowledgeable state park staff and volunteers. The distance and rigor vary from park to park, but all hikes aim to create a fun experience for the whole family. People are invited to savor the beauty of the state park’s natural resources with the comfort of an experienced guide so they may be inspired to take advantage of these local treasures throughout the year.
Visit America’s State Parks for details on First Day Hikes near you.

Young Solo Travelers
United Airlines has quietly expanded the age range of children who have to use a $150 service when flying without an accompanying adult, raising it from an upper limit of age 12 to age 15. The $150 ‘unaccompanied minor service’ fee applies to children ages 5 to 15 when traveling alone. The service includes airline employees ushering children to their seats and making sure they’re picked up by a designated adult upon landing. Delta and American Airlines charge the same $150 for unaccompanied minors (ages 5-15). Southwest charges $50 for unaccompanied minors ages 5 to 11.

Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
