Pollution-Free Paris?
The city of Paris on Monday took a historic decision to ban the 43,000 vehicles that travel along a stretch of the River Seine (between the Tuileries tunnel and the Henry IV tunnel) each day as part of an anti-pollution drive. The vote comes 3.5 years after the road between the Musee d’Orsay and the Pont de L’Alma on the Rive Gauche (Left Bank) was handed over to pedestrians and cyclists. The tarmac was replaced by around 11 acres of green space, including floating gardens.
The city’s mayor against pollution also made it possible to ban cars from Champs-Elysees Avenue on the first Sunday of every month.
The banks of the Seine, a magnet for lovers as well as tourists thronging to the Notre Dame Cathedral or the Louvre museum, have been classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.

Capital Happenings
The Washington Monument, which draws 600,000 visitors a year, is closing indefinitely because of ongoing problems with its elevator. The modernization project is expected to take up to nine months once work begins. The lone elevator carrying visitors to the top of the 555-foot obelisk has broken down frequently over the past two years, or about the time the monument reopened after being damaged in the 2011 earthquake.
The option to walk the 896 steps to the top of the monument during the closure will be limited to select groups, but not the general public.
Get that presidential feel with an autumn stroll around the South Lawn of the White House. The White House Gardens will open for one weekend, October 8 and 9, for free annual fall tours.
Timed tickets will be given out by the National Park Service at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion starting at 8:30A the morning of each tour. Tours will be from 10A-4:30P on Saturday, and 10A-2:30P Sunday.
Visitors will be taken through the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, Rose Garden, South Lawn, and White House Kitchen Garden – most of which are off limits on normal White House tours.
Public tour requests must be submitted through one’s Member of Congress. These self-guided tours are generally available Tuesday through Saturday (excluding federal holidays). Tours are scheduled on a first come, first served basis.
Can’t make it this season? Plan now to attend the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony (date TBA). Tickets are awarded through an online lottery that opens 10A on Friday, October 7 and closes at 10A on Monday, October 10. Lottery winners will be notified on October 27.
