TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Pollution-Free Paris?
The city of Paris on Monday took a historic decision to ban the 43,000 vehicles that travel along a stretch of the River Seine (between the Tuileries tunnel and the Henry IV tunnel) each day as part of an anti-pollution drive. The vote comes 3.5 years after the road between the Musee d’Orsay and the Pont de L’Alma on the Rive Gauche (Left Bank) was handed over to pedestrians and cyclists. The tarmac was replaced by around 11 acres of green space, including floating gardens.
The city’s mayor against pollution also made it possible to ban cars from Champs-Elysees Avenue on the first Sunday of every month.

The banks of the Seine, a magnet for lovers as well as tourists thronging to the Notre Dame Cathedral or the Louvre museum, have been classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.

Capital Happenings
The Washington Monument, which draws 600,000 visitors a year, is closing indefinitely because of ongoing problems with its elevator. The modernization project is expected to take up to nine months once work begins. The lone elevator carrying visitors to the top of the 555-foot obelisk has broken down frequently over the past two years, or about the time the monument reopened after being damaged in the 2011 earthquake.
The option to walk the 896 steps to the top of the monument during the closure will be limited to select groups, but not the general public.
