TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

Happy 100th to our National Parks
Free admission to our national parks on these dates:
Now through August 28: National Park Service Birthday
September 24: National Public Lands Day
November 11: Veterans Day
Do you have a fourth grader at home? The Every Kid in a Park program offers free admission to all national parks for the entire year — and the whole family gets in free, too.
If you’re 62 or older, pay just $10 for a Senior Pass, valid for admission in all national parks and federal lands for the rest of your life. The pass covers the entrance fees of everyone in the same car with the pass holder at parks that charge admission based on the carload.
Active duty military also receive free annual passes.
The Access Pass, good for lifetime admission to all national parks and federal lands, is free to anyone who has proof of residency and a medically determined permanent disability.

Check out all of the park pass options at NPS.
There are 282 national parks that are always free to enter. For instance, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is always free (and sees the most visitors annually of any national park). Redwood National Park in California is also free every day of the year, as are the Boston National Historical Park, Cumberland Gap, and most of the memorials, parkways, and parklands around the nation’s capital.

Catch the Warrior Army
Now through January 8, 2017, the exhibit at Chicago’s Field Museum showcases the glorious legacy of China’s first emperor Qin Shi Huang, who commissioned 8,000 larger-than-life soldiers made of terracotta, a whole army, to protect him in the afterlife. The site was buried under several feet of dirt for more than 2,000 years. In 1974, farmers digging a well uncovered some of the figures.
The exhibit contains several original figures, pottery, and artifacts, plus replicas of grand bronze horses and chariots found at the site. It also has a beautiful bronze figure of a duck, part of a treasure trove of bird statues discovered in 2000.
The exhibit, China’s First Emperor and his Terracotta Warriors is recommended for ages 8 and older.
Discovery tickets for admission to the museum and the exhibit are $31 adults, $26 seniors 65 and older and students with ID, and $22 for those ages 3-11.

NOTE: Airline fees can and often do exceed the cost of your flight! Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are purchased during the ticket booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
