TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

New TSA Alert

U.S. security officials will require more screening of powdered substances in carry-on bags on international flights headed to the United States starting June 30. That can cover powder items from cosmetics to baby powder to protein or energy mixes. The TSA said the change will apply to more than 350 milliliters of powder (about 12 oz.), or about the same as a soda.can. Passengers carrying larger amounts of powders including food, ground coffee or cosmetics could have their bags opened and the powder subjected to a test for explosives. TSA says it already requires the extra screening before domestic flights.
If you plan to travel with more than 12 ounces, pack it into a checked baggage. Cargo baggage undergoes more sophisticated scanning to detect explosives.
TSA officials said this isn’t a ban, but they gave this example – they don’t want travelers returning with a large container of Moroccan spice in a carry-on bag rather than checked luggage – forcing a checkpoint officer to toss the powder out before the traveler boards the plane.

Apps for the Road
iExit shows what exits are coming up and a list of retail, restaurants and gas stations you’ll find there. The app has integrations with GasBuddy to give you real-time gas prices at each exit – and Travel Coupons for same-day hotel discounts.
Plugshare has a database of more than 50,000 electric vehicle chargers around the United States. Before you depart, plan the trip on the company’s website and use the app while on the road.
Urgent.ly is great for drivers that occasionally make a long-distance road trip. It offers some of the same roadside assistance features that AAA does such as on-demand towing, lockout, jump start, fuel delivery, and flat tire help. When needed, request assistance within the app to be connected with the closest service provider. Payments are easily handled within the app. For Android.
Flush Toilet Finder features almost 100,000 public bathrooms in its database, along with info about whether or not you’ll need a code or have to pay a fee in order to use them. You can even search for restrooms without an internet connection. Bathrooms have user ratings.
