How To Get a VAT Refund
VAT is a type of tax that tourists pay in the European Union on many purchases. The tax can range from 15 to 27%. Visitors are entitled to refunds of VAT tax paid on goods (though not hotels, services and meals) and it takes a minimal amount of paperwork and a visit to a VAT desk at an EU airport before departure.
Don’t leave your refund money behind! Claim your VAT refund.
Here’s how it works:
First, carry your passport when you shop.
Shops will usually display a prominent sign in the window, advertising that it is a ‘tax-free’ or ‘VAT-free’ shop (sometimes in local language).
Ask the shop assistant what threshold applies to the purchase in order to be eligible for a refund.
At the check-out, show your passport proving your residence outside the EU.  A return flight ticket may be required to present.
The shop assistant will ask you to fill in a form with the necessary details. Add your credit card number if you want direct reimbursement.
You will receive an invoice for the goods.
Head to the airport early and seek out the customs desk, where the forms will be stamped and sent on their way. (If you are traveling throughout the E.U., do this at your last stop before returning home.)
You must show the invoice, the refund form, the goods and any other necessary documents to the customs officers of the last EU country you leave. The customs officers must stamp the form as proof of export. Without the stamp, you will not obtain the refund.

NOTE: Airline fees can and often do exceed the cost of your flight! Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are purchased during the ticket booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
