Cruise Costs Up
Norwegian Cruise Line is hiking the service charge (gratuity/tipping) on final bills by 3.6% to $13.99 per person, per day (most cabins) starting April 1. Passengers in suites will pay $16.99 per person, per day, or nearly a 10% rise.
With the increase, a family of four in a standard cabin will pay $391.72 in service charges on a typical seven-night cruise.
Other major cruise lines such as Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Princess now add from $12.95 to $13.50 per person, per day to final passenger bills. Service charges for cruise passengers have risen nearly 17% in just over two years.
Some lines (excluding Norwegian) allow passengers to lower or remove the service charge while on board vessels if they are unhappy with service.
Service charges on more upscale ocean and river cruise lines including Azamara, Crystal, Seabourn, Regent, SeaDream, Uniworld, Tauck and Scenic Cruises are not collected separately but are including in the base cruise rates.

Visit the Queen’s Palace
Visit Buckingham Palace this summer, the official London residence of the Queen and the most iconic royal building in the country. It’s one of only a few working royal palaces left in the world.
The history of the original building dates back to the early 1700s and finally became the official residence of the British monarch in 1837 after Queen Victoria came to the throne.
The 19 State Rooms at the palace are regularly used by the Royal family to entertain guests on their State, ceremonial and official visits to the United Kingdom. During summer months the Queen makes her yearly visit to Scotland allowing the palace to open up these lavish rooms to the public.
Take the Buckingham Palace Tour from July 22 to October 1.
Explore the lavishly furnished State Rooms, containing some of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection. Highlights include:
Paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, Poussin, Canaletto and Claude
Sculpture by Canova and Chantrey
Exquisite examples of Sèvres porcelain
Some of the finest English and French furniture in the world
Every year, Buckingham Palace’s summer opening features a special exhibition. This limited edition exhibition can only be seen during that year’s summer opening. This year’s exhibition, Royal Gifts, showcases some of the official gifts given to the Queen during her reign.
The summer opening of Buckingham Palace is extremely popular so booking tickets in advance is recommended. Entry is timed.
Adult Ticket: From £23 ($28.48)
Family Ticket: From £59 ($73 for 2 adults and 2 to 3 under age 17)
Here are the Top 10 things to see at Buckingham Palace.

NOTE: Airline fees can and often do exceed the cost of your flight! Additional charges now apply to budget and sale rates on most airlines for a carry-on bag, checked baggage and advance seat assignments. The least expensive fees are charged when these options are purchased during the ticket booking process. Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.

EMC2 Chicago
A science and art-inspired hotel will open in the late spring on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. The boutique property, Hotel EMC2 will feature whimsical elements in public spaces and guest rooms.
The Infusary, for example, is an attention-grabbing, chandelier-inspired contraption that straddles the line between functional bar equipment and decorative art. Stretching from the top of the bar to the 20-foot ceiling, the Infusary will dispense flavored spirits and fortified liquors.
Guests will be greeted in the lobby by a 7-foot-tall zoetrope, a 19th-century device that creates the illusion of movement.
Rose gold fixtures in guest rooms evoke vintage copper piping, and the transparent shower in the center of the room can be concealed with the pull of a wraparound curtain that doubles as a piece of art. Guests will also find metallic acoustical amplifiers for their mobile devices and dramatic, metallic prints of turbulent seas and clouds hanging over the bed.
Hotel EMC2 is a member of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection.
Rates start from $249 per night.
