New Rail Route in Scotland
The UK’s longest new domestic railway for 100 years promotes the charms of south-east Scotland. The new Borders Railway follows the old Waverley Line, running from Edinburgh to the new station of Tweedbank. The train will be steam hauled on the outward journey and diesel hauled on the return. The line will operate every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday between September 10 and October 18.
The new station, Tweedbank, is located just outside Melrose — considered the prettiest of the little Borders towns, with chic shops, cozy cafes and delis. The heart of Robert the Bruce lay in the abbey ruins.
Some attractions offer a tourist shuttle service from certain stations. Rosslyn Chapel – of Da Vinci Code fame – has pledged to meet each train and ferry visitors to the chapel from Eskbank station in a minibus.
The line brings 1,500 miles of walking trails within reach, and also cycling routes, including the 250-mile Borderloop. The area is also known for the spectacular ruins of four great 12th-century abbeys – Dryburgh, Melrose, Jedburgh and Kelso – now also linked by cycling and walking routes.
The Borders Abbeys Way is a picture-postcard 64-mile walking route running through woodland, along the banks of the salmon-rich Tweed and across rolling farmland. From Gorebridge, visit the 14th-century Crichton Castle. Stow is the hopping-off point for 16th-century Thirlestane Castle and is on the National Cycle Network.
The Buccleuch Arms in St. Boswells won Scottish Inn of the Year 2015.
Walking distance from Tweedbank station is Abbotsford House, the home of Sir Walter Scott. The grand baronial mansion Scott designed has an armour-lined entrance hall, a library with 9,000 rare volumes, and an exhibition center with a moving documentary. The novelist died here in 1832 and is buried in the most hauntingly beautiful of Borders abbeys, Dryburgh, among gnarled yews and cedars of Lebanon said to have been planted by Crusaders.
Day trips from Edinburgh cost from £3.70 ($5.70) to Shawfair and up to £11.20 ($17) to Tweedbank.

Jumping & Bridge Day Weekend in WV
‘Are they nuts?’ These are some of the three most common words adventurers staying at Adventures on the Gorge utter during West Virginia’s annual Bridge Day Weekend, Friday-Sunday, October 16-18. The premier adventure resort is the best home base in the state during the funky annual festival, one of the largest extreme sports events in the country and the largest gathering of BASE (Building, Antenna, Span and Earth) jumpers in the world.
The big event will be held on the New River Gorge. More than 200,000 spectators watch from vantage points on the bridge and from rafts on the New River as jumpers leap, dive or catapult from the 876-foot-tall New River Gorge Bridge every 25 seconds while hundreds of rappellers descend from the bridge on fixed ropes.
The best seat in the house during the extreme event is from the river, where rafters on the New River can watch the jumpers float down to eye level and observe the acrobatic gyrations of the highly skilled rappellers.
The resort is offering vacation packages for travelers who want to experience the festivities, including lodging, some meals and rafting on the New and Gauley Rivers. Package rates for a two-day vacation begin at $169 per person.
The resort also offers a package featuring a night camping next to the river, with gourmet meals prepared over an open fire by a chef featured on Food Network’s show ‘Chopped.’  Travelers can rent camping gear from the resort or bring their own.
The Gauley River offers one of the best river-centric experiences in the world, especially during the fall season, when the hemlock leaves change and the river water is unusually warm (as the air cools down as autumn progresses, the temperature of the river below the dam rises because the coolest water from the bottom of the lake is released first and the warmest water last).
Located near Fayetteville, West Virginia, Adventures on the Gorge (AOTG) is best-known for rafting trips on two of the best whitewater rivers in the country – the New River and the Gauley River. The resort is located on more than 1,000 acres and features three restaurants and two popular bars. The adventure resort was selected one of the Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth in a National Geographic Adventure survey
