TRAVEL TIPS & TIDBITS

New High-Speed Rail
Singapore and Malaysia will build a high-speed rail linking the smaller island to Malaysia’s capital of Kuala Lumpur. The 350km line (217 miles) will shoot travelers at a top speed of 300km/h (186 mph), allowing someone to go from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in just 90 minutes. The equivalent journey takes about five hours by car on the highway, and 11 hours across existing train services. Flying between the two cities takes just under an hour, but travelers spend additional time checking in and waiting to board, which can stretch travel time to several hours. The overall project is expected to cost about $12 billion. Construction is expected to start in 2018, with passenger service expected in 2026.

Louvre Made Easy
The Louvre dates back to 1190 and was once the palace fortress for King Philippe II.  The structure doesn’t have the logical visitor layout for a multi-story museum that stores 70,000 pieces of art . Wait times can be up to three hours at the entrance and once inside, newcomers can be overwhelmed and feel lost.
To make the museum more user-friendly and accessible to its more than 8 million annual visitors, the Louvre has just introduced a geo-locator app for multimedia devices that can instantly calculate a path through the museum from da Vinci’s Mona Lisa to Gericault’s The Raft of the Medusa. The app is a key part of a 53.5 million euro ($59 million) project to make the museum more user-friendly.  Added are nearly 40,000 banners, wall text, signs and symbols that now explain its treasures in a more readable and concise way in English and Spanish.
In addition to giving users their exact pinpoint location in three dimensions (accessible on the museum’s wireless network), the free ‘My Visit to the Louvre’ app is stocked with info for more than 600 major artworks. When you’re ready to move on from a Michelangelo sculpture and wish to see the Mona Lisa, the app will show you the way.
In the works is another application for musical playlists coordinated with specific artworks.

Fees climb higher after flights are reserved and even higher when adding these options at airport check-in. Kayak offers the most up-to-date Fees Chart for all domestic and international airlines.
