Money expert Clark Howard warned us not to buy gift cards — for good reason.
“There has never been a year that it has been more dangerous to receive or to give gift cards for restaurants and retailers,” Clark said. “Both industries are having a terrible time right now.”
If you give someone a gift card and the store or restaurant goes belly up, the recipient is usually out of luck.
The one exception to Clark’s No Gift Cards rule
“A gift card can be a good deal if you get bonus money,” he says. “Joel of our crew got 50% bonus on a restaurant gift card recently, and my wife got 22% bonus on a restaurant gift card recently.”
And it just so happens that Sunday, December 2, offers a great opportunity to get “bonus money” on gift card from a store that’s not likely to go away any time soon, as Target will be offering 10% of the purchase of gift cards purchased both in-store and online.
As ClarkDeals Deal Digger Laura writes: “It’s always nice to get more bang for your buck during the holidays and Target is ready to make things all the merrier. Clark took advantage of this deal last year and sent us a picture! ”
So, as they say, there’s an exception to almost every rule and if you are the type to take advantage of those exceptions (or just really like giving gift cards as gifts) Sunday is your day!
