These 7 Stores Still Offer Layaway Programs

If you’re of a certain age, you no doubt remember that one of the most popular payment methods in retail was layaway — a program where you could put a certain amount of money down on an item and then make payments on it until you had paid for it in full.

Not only was layaway convenient for budget-sensitive customers, it created frequent visits for retailers as well. You may wonder which stores still have layaway programs and how they work at those stores.

These Stores Have the Best Layaway Programs For 2019

In this article, we’re going to cover the stores with some of the best layaway programs, as well as their fees, terms and other pertinent details. Here are seven retailers that still have layaway programs:

Walmart practices “Holiday Layaway,” which, as its name implies, covers the seasonal period before and during the holidays.

Walmart’s layaway program typically runs from early September to mid-December. The supercenter locations may offer it year-round for jewelry purchases.

Any one item must cost more than $10 to qualify for layaway and your total purchase must be at least $50.

The great thing about Walmart’s layaway program is that you don’t have to pay any interest.

  • Downpayment: 10% or $10, whichever is greater
  • Service fee: None
  • Cancellation fee: $10

Burlington Coat Factory

Burlington Coat Factory has offered layaway for decades. All you have to do is take your items to the service desk and they will take care of the rest.

  • Downpayment: 20%
  • Service fee: $5
  • Cancellation fee: $10

Big Lots

Big Lots doesn’t have a layaway program per se, but they do have something similar: Price Hold. With the Price Hold program, Big Lots lets shoppers hold the current price on merchandise when it’s either out of stock or the customer can’t pay for it in full.

Here’s how Big Lots explains its Price Hold program: “Once you are within two weeks of paying off the Price Hold, we will have you contact the store to verify that the merchandise will be available when you plan to pick it up.”

Here’s the thing to know : Price Hold is only available in stores that stock furniture.

  • Downpayment: None
  • Service fee: None
  • Cancellation fee: Depends on the store

Marshalls & T.J. Maxx

Marshalls and T.J. Maxx, which are both owned by TJX Companies, offer a layaway plan, but not at every location. Call your local store to find out if they participate.

For T.J. Maxx stores, you can see their store locator online. If you see a hanger icon, they offer layaway.

If your local Marshalls or T.J. Maxx does have a layaway plan, they typically will hold items for up to 30 days. Jewelry, food, items marked down and furniture are ineligible.

  • Downpayment: $10 or 10%, which ever is greater
  • Service fee: Typically $5, but it varies by state
  • Cancellation fee: $5 in most states

Sears & Kmart

Sears and Kmart are owned by Sears Holdings and offer layaway programs. The Sears and Kmart program allows you to use their respective apps to put an item on layaway. They offer eight- or 12-week plans and require that you pay something every two weeks.

The layaway programs have different fees based on whether you’re doing layaway online or in the store. Here is the breakdown:

  • Downpayment: $10
  • Service fee: $5 ($10 if 12 weeks with in-store purchase of $300 or more)
  • Cancellation fee: $10 ($20 with in-store purchase of $300 or more)
