When Are Taxes Due? Important Tax Dates in 2022

Written by |

Mark your calendars: The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced it is accepting and processing tax returns starting on January 24, 2022.

IRS Tax Dates for 2022

The January 10 announcement details several key dates and deadlines for Americans in 2022.

“Planning for the nation’s filing season process is a massive undertaking, and IRS teams have been working non-stop these past several months to prepare,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig in a news release. “The pandemic continues to create challenges, but the IRS reminds people there are important steps they can take to help ensure their tax return and refund don’t face processing delays. Filing electronically with direct deposit and avoiding a paper tax return is more important than ever this year. And we urge extra attention to those who received an Economic Impact Payment or an advance Child Tax Credit last year. People should make sure they report the correct amount on their tax return to avoid delays.”

Interestingly, the deadline to file taxes isn’t April 15 this year because of the Emancipation Day holiday. Instead, there are two deadlines this year:

  • April 18 for nearly everyone
  • April 19 for people who live in Maine or Massachusetts due to Patriots’ Day

Key Tax Season Dates

  • January 14: IRS Free File opens for eligible taxpayers to begin filing returns
  • January 24: Tax season begins
  • April 18: Due date to file or request an extension
  • April 19: Due date to file or request an extension (Maine and Massachusetts only)
  • October 17: Deadline for taxpayers requesting an extension

While the IRS Free File program opens on January 14, 2022, returns will not be processed until January 24.
