How To Watch Golf Without Cable: Stream the PGA Tour

Are you looking to watch golf by streaming the PGA Tour instead of paying for cable each month?

Good news! It’s entirely possible to accomplish this without paying the cable or satellite company a dime.

In this article, I’ll walk you through all the ways that you can cut the cord and remain as big a golf fan as ever.

How To Stream the PGA TOUR

Though golf is a global game with several different tours competing year-round, most of the world’s top players congregate in the United States to compete on the PGA TOUR.

The 2020-21 PGA TOUR season schedule consists of 50 events. That’s more than usual, mostly due to making up postponements caused by the coronavirus pandemic. However, this creates more opportunities to enjoy PGA TOUR golf than any schedule in the last several decades.

To stream these PGA TOUR events without cable, you’ll need access to Golf Channel, CBS, NBC and ESPN.

A live TV streaming service is going to be your best solution for accessing all of these channels without cable. YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and fuboTV each offer all four channels in their $64.99 base packages.

You also can access limited live streaming of select golf tournaments by subscribing to ViacomCBS’ Paramount+ or NBC’s Peacock.

While portions of the four “major” golf tournaments air on channels like CBS, NBC or ESPN, the majority of the week-to-week tour coverage actually can be found on NBC’s Golf Channel. So prioritizing a streaming service that includes that channel will help you enjoy the most golf possible.

PGA TOUR LIVE: Streaming Subscription Package

If you’re looking to avoid paying for a live TV streaming service, you may be able to satisfy your golf itch by paying for a PGA TOUR LIVE subscription.

This is a standalone golf streaming service that does not require a cable or live TV streaming subscription for live golf.

For $9.99 per month or $39.99 per golf season (a much better value), you can stream live coverage of PGA TOUR events for most weeks of the season. This includes special player-specific feeds that are not available to the broadcast television audience.

You can subscribe to this as a part of NBC Sports Gold, which grants you access to more streaming sports options, or you can pay for it through Amazon Prime Video. You’re getting the same golf coverage at the same price either way.

It’s worth noting that this subscription does not include coverage of any of golf’s four major tournaments nor the Ryder Cup, the biggest golf events of the year.

Later in the article, we’ll help you decide how to stream each of those events individually.

How To Watch The Masters Without Cable

The 2021 Masters Tournament was played in April at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. Next year’s Masters is scheduled for April 7-10, 2022.

The Masters, which is one of the most anticipated sporting events of the spring, is also one of the “least televised” golf events of the year. That’s actually good news for streamers.

The tournament retains streaming rights for the event, making it possible to stream much of the tournament for free from its website. And for many hours of the tournament, it’s actually the only place to watch it.

The daily national broadcast rights for The Masters are split between ESPN and CBS. ESPN owns the rights to Rounds 1 and 2 on Thursday and Friday, while CBS picks up the action for Rounds 3 and 4 on Saturday and Sunday.

You can subscribe to a live TV streaming service like YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV to gain access to both channels.

However, it may be possible to stream those broadcasts without a live TV streaming service. Paramount+ offers subscribers a live stream of their local CBS affiliate, and ESPN+ offers streaming coverage of the masters as well.

How To Watch the PGA Championship Without Cable

The 2021 PGA Championship was played in May at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina. Next year’s PGA Championship will be played at Southern Hills Country Club in Kansas from May 19-22, 2022.

The broadcast rights to the PGA Championship belong to ESPN and CBS. So to watch this tournament without cable, you’re going to need access to a streaming service that offers the ESPN family of channels as well as CBS.

ESPN will have the only television broadcast on Thursday and Friday (Rounds 1 and 2) and will split the broadcast with CBS on Saturday and Sunday (Rounds 3 and 4).

You can subscribe to a live TV streaming service like YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV to gain access to both channels.

The ESPN+ streaming service, which is a separate subscription, also will have coverage of the event.

How To Watch the U.S. Open Without Cable

The 2021 U.S. Open is set for June 17-20 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in California.

The broadcast rights to the U.S. Open belong to NBC. NBC owns both the Golf Channel and the Peacock streaming service, which are slated to air portions of this event as well.

So to watch this tournament without interruption, you’ll need access to a live TV streaming service that offers both NBC and the Golf Channel, and you’ll also need a Peacock subscription.

The United States Golf Association (USGA), which puts on this event each year, also has a live stream available on its website. This is not the television feed, but it does give you a live look at the action for select players on select holes.

How To Watch the British Open Without Cable

The 2021 British Open (also known as The Open Championship) will be held from July 15-18 at Royal St. George’s Golf Course in Kent, England.

The broadcast rights to the British Open belong to NBC. NBC also owns the Golf Channel, which will play a big role in the television broadcast of the event.

Golf Channel will be the exclusive home of the event during Rounds 1 and 2, before sharing the television coverage responsibilities with NBC during Rounds 3 and 4 (Saturday and Sunday).

United States streamers will have to adjust their sleep schedules to watch this event, as the time zone difference between America and England means much of the tournament is played in what are the pre-dawn hours here.

How To Watch the Ryder Cup Without Cable

The 2020 Ryder Cup, postponed because of the COVID pandemic, will be played Sept. 21-26, 2021, at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

This team competition between the United States and Europe pits some of the world’s top golfers against each other in a tournament that is usually played once every two years. You can read more about how it works here.
