Receipt Hog is a free app that helps you turn receipts into cash by uploading pictures of your shopping receipts and answering questions about your shopping trip.

In this article, I’ll take a close look at four things that will be helpful know about Receipt Hog before you use it.

I downloaded the app to check out Receipt Hog myself and compared it to other cash back apps to see if it’s worth it.

This article was updated in June 2023 and I review it every 12 months. Detailed notes on all updates can be found here.

4 Things To Know Before Earning Cash Back With Receipt Hog

Whether you’re shopping online or in a store, Receipt Hog may give you an additional opportunity to save. You can visit the website or download the app for iOS or Android to begin earning rewards including “coins” that you can redeem for cash.

Once you create an account with Receipt Hog, you can upload pictures of receipts, connect online accounts and take surveys to earn cash. You’ll also be able to earn in-app bonuses like extra spins on the Hog Slots (I’ll explain those later in this article), and you can enter monthly sweepstakes.

If you’re ready to start sharing your receipts in exchange for cash back with Receipt Hog, here are four things to know:

Below, you’ll find detailed information on Receipt Hog including what to expect once you’ve created an account and how to start earning cash back.

What Is Receipt Hog?

According to the app, Receipt Hog lets you share purchase information and take surveys in order to earn “coins” which can be redeemed for cash. The more data and information you share, the more rewards you can earn.

There are a few ways to share your purchase information with Receipt Hog including uploading pictures of your receipts, connecting your retail loyalty accounts and filling out surveys. Unfortunately, not all purchases can help you earn “coins,” which is the in-app currency that you can redeem for actual cash. Still, any receipt you upload can help you earn something, whether it’s coins, in-app bonuses or extra monthly sweepstakes entries.

It’s free to create an account with Receipt Hog. When I checked it out myself, I downloaded the app first. In June 2023, the app had a 4.7 rating on the App Store based on 151.3K reviews and a 4.5 rating on Google Play from 198K reviews. After I created an account on the app, I visited the website. While you can check your coin balance, invite friends and take surveys online, you’ll need the app to upload pictures of receipts and redeem your coins.

How Does Receipt Hog Work?

Receipt Hog earns its money from partnering retailers in exchange for encouraging customers to shop there. Once you’ve created a free account, you’ll be able to link your online or store loyalty accounts and begin earning rewards with each purchase. You can also upload pictures of your paper receipts (as long as they aren’t more than two weeks old).

Unlike other cash back apps, you won’t have to find and claim offers for specific products or stores. Instead, you’ll upload photos of any paper or digital receipt to earn rewards. Rewards include things like in-app bonuses, sweepstakes entries and “coins” that you can redeem for cash. Once you earn 1,000 coins, you’ll be able to cash out.

Below is more detailed information on each step of the process from registering with Receipt Hog to earning rewards to redeeming your cash back.

Get Started

The first step is to create an account. To do this, you can download the app for iOS or Android. When I signed up for Receipt Hog, I used the iPhone app.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, click “Sign up.” Then you’ll need to fill out some basic information including your country, birthday, gender and email address. After that, you can choose whether or not to enable location services and/or push notifications for the app.

After you’ve created an account, you’ll see the app’s homepage. There, you’ll have 50 free coins to begin with.

Once you’re logged in, you can begin uploading pictures of receipts, linking online/store loyalty accounts and earning cash back rewards.

In-Person and Online Shopping

Now that you’ve set up your account, you’ll be ready to start earning cash back and other rewards from your in-person and online shopping trips. To do this, you’ll simply need a copy of your paper or digital receipt.

Click on the “Receipts” tab to begin. From there, you can click the camera icon in the bottom-right corner to take a photo of your receipt.

Once you snap a picture of your receipt, you’ll have to enter some details about the shopping trip itself including who went (how many adult males, adult females, boys and girls) and then rate your trip (out of five stars). Once you submit the receipt, it can take up to a week to process.

After your receipt is processed, it’s added to your history and you’ll see what you’ve earned. Some receipts help you earn “coins,” which can eventually be redeemed for cash back. Other receipts help you earn in-app bonuses like spins on the Hog Slots.

Coin receipts are from stores that primarily sell consumable products: grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, discount stores, pet stores and more. Receipts from Costco, Safeway, Dollar General, Walmart, Ulta, Total Wine and similar stores will earn coins in the Receipt Hog app.

According to the website, here’s how much coin receipts are worth:

  • <$10 = 5 coins
  • $10-$50 = 10 coins
  • $50-$100 = 15 coins
  • $100+ = 20 coins

The goal is to earn at least 100 coins from receipts each week. Once you do, additional receipts submitted during the same week are then worth five coins regardless of their total. Still, keep in mind that you’ll need at least 1,000 coins to redeem them for cash back.

Receipts from other retailers, such as clothing stores and home improvement stores, will earn a spin at the Hog Slots. This is an in-app game where you win bonus coins and other prizes (including having your last shopping trip paid for!). Receipts from Macy’s, Kohl’s, The Home Depot, Staples, Michael’s, The Apple Store and others will earn spins.

Each week, you can submit up to 20 coin receipts and up to 20 spin receipts.

More Ways To Earn

In addition to in-store and online shopping, there are three main ways to earn cash back from Receipt Hog: slots, store loyalty accounts and surveys.

“Slots” is a tab at the bottom of the app. When you click it, you’ll see this in-app game:

When you first create an account, you’ll get one free spin. Possible prizes include 2-2000 coins, $100 and a daily trip winner. You can earn more spins on the Hog Slots by uploading “spin receipts” from retailers such as clothing and home improvement stores.

From the homepage of the app, you can also connect your online accounts to earn coins. When I tried out this feature, I had the option to connect my Amazon, Publix and Instacart accounts.

In exchange for connecting your accounts and sharing your purchasing information, Receipt Hog offers a one-time bonus of 36 coins and five Sweepstakes entries every month your account stays connected. To link your account, simply click the online retailer’s logo and log in through the Receipt Hog app.

Finally, you can earn coins in exchange for completing surveys in the app. When a survey is available, you’ll see it on the homepage of the app or website. I had the opportunity to take the “Receipt Hogger Questionnaire” when I first created an account. It was a short survey that took less than five minutes in exchange for 30 coins.

Redeem Coins for Cash Back

Once you have collected 1,000 coins in Receipt Hog’s app, you’ll be ready to redeem them for gift cards or cash back via PayPal.

To redeem your coins, click the “Rewards” tab at the bottom of the app. Then, you’ll have to take a short questionnaire, verify your email address and verify your device. Then you can redeem your coins.

According to Receipt Hog’s website, here’s how much your coins are worth:

  • 1,000 coins = $5
  • 2,900 coins = $15
  • 4,300 coins = $25
  • 6,500 coins = $40

How To Get the Most Out of Receipt Hog

Unlike a lot of other cash back apps, very minimal planning is required to earn cash back with Receipt Hog. Instead, it’s important to keep up with your receipts whether they’re paper or digital. Once you take a picture of the receipt with the app, you’ll see what rewards you’ve earned.

In my experience, there are a few ways to maximize the cash back you’ll earn with Receipt Hog:

  • Upload at least one receipt weekly. When you first sign up for Receipt Hog, you’ll be a “Level 1” and earn a slot spin at the end of the week if you upload a receipt. You’ll go up a level each week that you upload a receipt. When you reach level 12, the weekly reward becomes 100 coins instead of a slot spin. By level 40, the weekly reward is 480 coins!
  • Know which receipts are coin receipts. Unfortunately, not all receipts will help you earn coins on Receipt Hog. Stores that sell groceries, health items and beauty products are considered coin receipts and they’re much more valuable since they’ll help you work toward cash back earnings.
  • Take surveys as they come available. If you have the opportunity to take a survey on Receipt Hog, take it! The first available survey I took had fewer than 10 questions and rewarded me with 30 bonus coins. This could be a great way to work toward cash back earnings.
  • Stack your savings. Plan your purchases around store sales, manufacturer coupons and other cash back apps. You may be able to save with an in-store sale, an Ibotta cash back offer and earn coins on Receipt Hog.
  • Invite your friends. You can share your friend code with others to earn 10 bonus spins in the app, which could lead to cash back prizes. You can find your friend code in the app by clicking the “Rewards” tab. On the website, it’s at the top of the screen.

Final Thoughts: Pros and Cons

Overall, Receipt Hog is a fun way to earn cash back on purchases over time. I was impressed by how easy the app is to use and the fact that you don’t have to claim offers or buy specific products to earn coins. Of course, there were some definite drawbacks as well.

Since I’ve signed up for Receipt Hog myself, here are a few of the biggest pros and cons I’ve found.

Pros:Cons:
Variety. You can upload any receipt to Receipt Hog and earn at least some type of reward whether it’s coins or slot spins. That means no matter where you shop or what you buy, it could help you earn cash back. Time. Since you have to have 1,000 coins to cash out and receipts are worth only 5-20 coins each, it can take a while before you’re actually seeing any money in your account.
Convenience. The app is really easy to use and very highly rated on both Google Play and the App Store. Plus, it isn’t necessary to plan ahead too much with Receipt Hog. Since nearly any receipt is eligible, it’s a convenient way to earn cash back.Eligibility. Not all receipts will help you earn coins that can be redeemed for cash. Instead, some receipts will give you extra spins on the Hog Slots and/or extra sweepstakes entries.
Fun. Receipt Hog offers a lot of in-app bonuses, rewards and incentives to keep you on the app. Sometimes these can lead to additional coins or cash, which is extra money in your wallet.Limited website experience. You can’t earn cash back, upload pictures of receipts, link your online accounts or redeem your rewards on Receipt Hog’s website. You’ll find a much better user experience on the app.
