The Best Time and Place To Buy Power Tools

Written by |

Whether you’re building your tool collection or looking to tackle a specific project around the house, there are several opportunities throughout the year to save big on the power tools you’ll need.

Power tools range from drills to shop vacs, and prices vary just as much. In order to ensure you’ll be getting the most use out of your purchase, it’s important to know what you’re shopping for before deciding when and where to buy it.

Our team at has been searching for the best deals available on power tools since 2016, and we’ve posted over 1,000 price drops and promotions. I looked at the months and stores where we found those deals to see when and where the best prices were showing up.

This article was updated in March 2024 and I review it every six months. Detailed notes on all updates can be found here.

When To Get the Best Deals on Power Tools

If you’re a new homeowner, you may be looking for an inclusive toolkit to get started with renovations and impending repairs. Or you may be in the middle of a project before you need something specific to complete the task, like a rotary saw or palm sander.

In either case, you should take the time to consider when and where you’ll find the best price on your purchase before heading to the nearest hardware store.

We looked back at the deals that has found since 2016, and here’s when we’ve posted the most price drops and price promotions.

Like many popular products, power tools go on sale during Labor Day and Black Friday. During those holidays (and throughout the rest of the year), you’ll find the most competitive prices both online and in stores. Note that the above graph doesn’t include data beyond the first quarter of 2024 yet, but I expect to see several more deals show up throughout November and December.

If you’re looking for power tools earlier in the year, note that we’ve seen a surge of deals showing up around March and April. That means you may want to start shopping a couple of months early when you start shopping for a Father’s Day gift. June and August are also great times to buy power tools with Father’s Day and post-Father’s Day discounts plus summer renovation sales.

No matter when you’re looking to make your final purchase, it’s important to watch prices so that you recognize a great deal when it shows up.

Tips on Buying Power Tools

As with any investment, it’s important to know exactly what you’re shopping for and avoid overpaying for brands or specialized equipment that won’t be used beyond one project.

If you are an avid power tool user, consider sticking to one trustworthy brand and looking for the best deals on those tools. Most tool brands offer batteries and add-ons that are compatible with their other tools, which can help you save money in the long run.
