Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer and many of us will be trying to enjoy it in the great outdoors — so an effective bug spray is a must!

As with anything, all bug sprays aren’t created equal. We’ve compiled a list of the best bug sprays that can protect your skin as well as your budget.

Here are the best bug sprays to look for this summer

Consumer Reports has tested a variety of bug sprays to determine the most effective. While the test mainly measured how long the spray protected against mosquitoes, it also factored in whether damage was done to other materials the spray might come into contact with.

Bonus: The sprays tested were found to be as effective on ticks as they were on mosquitoes!

The ratings chart based on the test results also gives info on price and what the active ingredients are.

As you can see, the top rated result is a Total Home (CVS) brand product — not a name you probably associate with bug sprays. Even better, that spray costs just over a dollar an ounce, almost half the price of the next highest rated product from Off.

Once again, more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better!
