Which credit card issuer is best?
The answer you receive to this question likely depends on the personal experiences of the person you’ve asked.
But if you ask enough people, you’ll start to see some clear trends on which issuers you should consider and which you should avoid.
That’s exactly what J.D. Power did. The popular consumer insights, data and analytics research company recently unveiled the results of its 2023 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study. (More information on how this study was conducted can be found here.)
Let’s take a look at some of the results and see how they apply to some of Team Clark’s favorite rewards credit cards.
American Express Is America’s Favorite Credit Card Issuer in 2023
According to the research conducted by J.D. Power, American Express is America’s favorite credit card issuer this year.
And it’s not particularly close.
American Express scored a 657 on J.D. Power’s 1,000-point scale used to measure “Overall Customer Satisfaction.” The next closest issuers, Bank of America and Discover, trailed by nearly 30 points in the scoring system.
Chase and Citi, which are two of the most well-known credit card issuers in America, ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, among qualified issuers. Their scores landed slightly below the 2023 Issuer Average of 609.
Here’s a look at the complete list of issuers included in the study and their score from the 2023 research:

American Express is the issuer of a few cards that are on Team Clark’s lists of best credit cards for various purchases.
The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, for example, is one of our favorites because it offers up to 6% back on purchases at select U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per year (then 1%). Terms apply.
And The Platinum Card® from American Express is a favorite travel credit card for many thanks to a long list of travel-friendly benefits, such as airport lounge access, that offset a hefty annual fee.
