These Credit Card Issuers Are Extending Welcome Bonuses Right Now

If you signed up for a new credit card in recent months, there may be some good news regarding your welcome bonus period.

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, credit card issuers American Express and Chase have announced extensions for welcome bonus offers.

Each will be extending the spending period for three months on eligible credit cards to allow consumers a better chance to take advantage of these bonus opportunities. This can impact both welcome bonuses that are achieved by required minimum spending as well as bonuses that accrue as you go.

While this only applies to select newly opened credit cards, it is still welcome news for many American consumers who are required to shelter in place at their homes while the nation endures COVID-19.

Even better, there’s no action required on your part if your new credit card qualifies for this benefit extension. Both American Express and Chase have confirmed that they are automatically making this adjustments to accounts.

American Express: Who Benefits From the Welcome Bonus Extension?

American Express laid out its plan for extending the welcome bonus period for eligible cards that were approved in a six-month period spanning back to December 1, 2019.

Here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know:

  • American Express is extending welcome bonus periods for an additional three months. For example, if you had a six-month bonus period it is now a nine-month period. If you had a nine-month period it’s now a year.
  • To be eligible for the extension, you must have been approved for your card between December 1, 2019 and May 31, 2020.
  • This extension does not apply to new card benefits like introductory 0% APR periods. It is for welcome bonuses only.
  • The extension will automatically be applied to your account. There is no action required to receive the extra time period for the bonuses.

American Express says that this extension applies for “U.S. Consumer and Business Cards issued by American Express National Bank to a Basic Card Member.”

This means non-U.S. based offerings are not eligible. Likewise, American Express-branded cards issued by someone other than American Express are not eligible.

Chase Credit Cards: Who Benefits From the Welcome Bonus Extension?

Chase confirmed to Team Clark that they are offering eligible new card members a three-month extension for earning bonus points. The window for new card members who are eligible is only three months, dating back to the beginning of 2020.

Here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know:

  • For credit card accounts opened from January 1, 2020 through March 31, 2020, Chase is extending the time to earn points bonus offer by three months.
  • That means that cardmembers now have a total of six months from their account opening date to earn their new account bonus (including miles, points, cashback and statement credit offers).
  • There’s nothing the customer needs to do to activate this extension, it’s automatic.
  • Chase started notifying those customers the week of April 13-19.
