It’s been a tough year to buy a car, but there are some deals to be had right now.

U.S. News & World Report recently compiled a list of special pricing offers. They’re good through at least Sept. 7, 2021, according to the publication’s website.

Although prices for both new and used vehicles have been inflated in recent months, money expert Clark Howard says, “The ugly market will fade, and supply and demand will come back into balance.”

There is some indication already that the new car market is starting to improve.

No matter when you’re in the market for a new vehicle, there are some strategies that will help you get what you want for the price you can afford.

Don’t Go Over Your Budget

Given the fragile state of the economy, this is not the time to overextend yourself for a new car. If you can’t afford a new vehicle, you might consider a used car which would typically be cheaper.

Rent Before You Buy

Clark says a crucial step in the buying process is to spend a good deal of time trying out the vehicle you want to purchase. This will give you a feel for how it handles and other creature comforts.

“The best way to test drive a car is to rent it for a day or two,” Clark says. “That’s the ultimate test drive.”

Some dealerships now offer overnight test drives. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

Make Sure You Get the Full Price in Writing

Clark says dealers usually try to entice would-be customers by advertising car prices without all the fees included.

“Know that you should check first to see what that new vehicle will actually cost you before you proceed with buying one,” he says.

That means it’s up to you to ask for an itemized list of all the fees attached to the bill.
