Are you a fan of the Yellowstone television series? If so, you’ve probably heard about the new prequel series titled 1883.
1883, which stars country music stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw alongside Sam Elliott, is debuting its first season on streaming service Paramount+.
It’s the origin story of the Dutton family (featured prominently on the Yellowstone series) and how they came to settle in Montana back in the 19th century.
But you cannot watch it in the same way that you watch the Yellowstone TV series: You have to stream it.
Team Clark is here to help you figure out how you can stream 1883 in the most cost-effective way.
1883 does not debut new episodes on traditional television. You must watch them on Paramount+.
While you may be accustomed to watching Yellowstone on either Paramount Network or CMT, you cannot watch the prequel series on those channels.
Instead, you have to pay for access to the Paramount+ streaming service to see episodes of 1883. You can watch the entire library of available episodes on demand there.
As a promotion for the new series, Paramount Network did broadcast the first episode of 1883 on television following an episode of Yellowstone back in December 2021. This was to generate interest for the new show and was not a regular broadcast.
A subscription to Paramount+ is the only way to stream 1883 on demand.
Typically, episodes are subject to a staggered release that mimics traditional television. One new episode will be made available to stream each week. All previous episodes are available to stream at all times in case you need to catch up.
You can sign up for either a monthly or annual subscription to Paramount+, and you’ll get full access to the entire 1883 series in addition to other ViacomCBS hits from brands such as CBS, Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central.
The subscription costs begin at $4.99 per month. Here’s a quick look at the pricing model:
|Type of Subscription||Monthly Subscription Fee||Annual Subscription Fee|
You also might be able to lower your cost with a discount. T-Mobile offers a deal to its wireless phone service customers and sometimes even Paramount runs discounts on subscription pricing.
The most cost-efficient way to consume 1883 would be to wait until the entire first season has been released and then binge-watch all of the episodes within a month.
Paramount+ is different than the Paramount Network. Paramount+ is an on-demand video streaming service from ViacomCBS that was previously known as CBS All Access. Subscription plans start at $4.99 per month.
Paramount Network, which is the television channel that broadcasts new episodes of Yellowstone, is not available on Paramount+ and does not come included with a Paramount+ subscription. You need a live TV streaming service, such as Philo, or a cable TV subscription to access Paramount Network.

Yellowstone fans will find some familiar names and places, but this show is set in a different era with a different cast of characters. If you’re wondering whether you’d like 1883, here’s a plot synopsis from Paramount+:
“1883, a Yellowstone origin story, follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. From Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of Yellowstone, 1883 is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana.”
1883 features country music stars (and husband-wife duo) Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as leading characters. It also features Sam Elliott, who is well-known for his roles in Western films.
This show does not feature Kevin Costner, who plays the starring role of John Dutton on Yellowstone nor any of the other cast members from the original television series.

According to a report from Deadline, there will be a second season of 1883 that is also expected to have 10 episodes. The release date for those has not been announced.
