To meet the demands of consumers, UPS says it pays a premium for additional air and truck cargo capacity, temporary facilities and personnel.
During the holiday season, which is huge for online shopping, the company says its daily volume nearly doubles.
This new per-piece peak surcharge only applies during selected weeks in November and December. Here’s a breakdown of the additional fees for residential service:

Additionally, from November 19 through December 23, UPS will apply peak surcharges to large packages and packages that exceed maximum size limits.
These charges are on top of normal surcharges that apply to those items.
Meanwhile, FedEx announced in August that it won’t apply residential holiday season surcharges, except in the case of packages that require additional handling, are oversized or unauthorized.
