Do you have your license plate number memorized? Here’s a good reason why you should!

The Fishers Police Department in Indiana recently warned residents through its Facebook page about the so-called “license plate scam.”

Police warn of ‘license plate scheme’

According to police, they got a report about two men in a pick-up truck who pulled up alongside a woman’s vehicle, got her attention and told her she lost her license plate.

One of the men was allegedly holding up a license plate, pretending it belonged to the woman.

However, police say the woman knew her license plate number and that she was in danger, so she just kept on driving instead of pulling over.

Police asked residents to spread the word — and the post has been shared more than 12,000 times.

Multiple local news TV stations picked up the story, but this seems to be an isolated report.

One thing that’s worth mentioning: Snopes.com has an article that says similar reports of criminals stealing license plates in a scheme to steal cars are false.

If this latest report is accurate, it’s a good thing the woman knew her license plate number and kept driving!
