If you’re shopping around for new furniture that won’t break your budget, Ikea’s prices are hard to beat — and some of those prices have just dropped for 2018!

“New Lower Price” signs have gone up throughout the store on some of the retailer’s most popular items.

Save money with these DIY Ikea hacks

A few examples: The Malm queen bed frame is now $199, down from $229 last year. Pick up a small Billy bookcase for just $39, a $10 savings. And the Strandmon chair is now $229, down from $279 last year.

Many people love Ikea’s furniture as-is, but the DIY crowd has found creative ways to take it to the next level.

Do you recognize the coffee table below from Ikea? It’s the Vejmon coffee table, which has a new lower price of $99. My mom just added a custom quartz top for a look that’s more her style:

And this is just one example! DIY enthusiasts have shared dozens of ways they’ve transformed regular Ikea furniture into truly unique pieces. Here are five of the best Ikea hacks for your home:

1. Closet makeover

Those fancy closet organization systems can run up to $1,000 or more, but you can get organized on a budget using the Billy bookcase as a base. All it took was two bookcases, closet rods, white shelving board and some brackets to give this closet a $100 makeover. See the before and after photos at Southern Revivals.

2. New dresser on a dime

Ikea’s Rast dresser costs only $35, but it’s pretty plain straight out of the box. That’s why many people choose to paint and/or stain the piece of furniture for a more sophisticated look. IkeaHackers.net was able to pull off this DIY project for less than $50 by purchasing the dresser off Craigslist. It only took 45 minutes, plus time to dry overnight!

3. The perfect desk

Ikea sells plenty of ready-to-assemble desks, but the Ikea Hacks Do It Yourself Instagram account showed how one person made a desk from two Malm dressers and a piece of painted plywood.

4. Mid-century nightstand

Nightstands from retailers that specialize in mid-century furniture don’t come cheap, so why not transform Ikea’s Tarva nightstand, which sells for $40, into something you really like. Remodelaholic.com shared how some paint and wood stain can make it possible. Click here for step-by-step instructions.

5. Farmhouse coffee table

The Hemnes living room series from Ikea is rather traditional at first glance, but not after adding a wood top. The Creative Mom says she spent only $10 on the lumber to achieve this farmhouse look.

I spent a couple hours looking through Ikea hacks online and the Billy bookcase and Rast chest were two items that kept coming up — they’re versatile and easy to customize.
