As children prepare to go trick-or-treating for Halloween, local police departments across the country are asking parents to check for sex offenders so that they know which homes to avoid.

It doesn’t matter where you live in the U.S., the National Sex Offender Public Website is a good place to start.
Operated by the Department of Justice, the website will link to your state’s registry, which will allow you to enter your address and see if there are any sex offenders with current addresses nearby.
While researching for this story, I discovered several dozen sex offenders in just a two-mile radius.
In addition to the web-based search, the NSOPW mobile app provides information on registered sex offenders who have addresses within 1 mile of the smartphone running the app.
