Verizon: ‘You cannot make money in an unlimited video world’

DroidLife reports Verizon sent a message to employees stating that super-users who consume more than 200GB of data in a month will have to switch off their unlimited plans or find another wireless carrier by February 16.

The nation’s largest carrier seems to be making good on a promise it made back in July 2016 to axe service for customers used ‘extraordinary’ amounts of data in an effort to get them to switch plans.

Despite both T-Mobile and Sprint announcing new unlimited data plans in August 2016, Verizon has steadfastly maintained that it can’t make money when data use on its network just keeps growing unchecked.

‘At the end of the day, the majority of people don’t need unlimited plans. But the people who use unlimited plans can be abusive. They can really wreak havoc to your network,’ Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said during an investor conference in September 2016.

‘And at the end of the day…I continue to say, you cannot make money in an unlimited video world. You just can’t do it, because you need to generate the cash flow to keep up with your demand.’
