Apple’s iPhone is the most requested holiday gift for 2016, according to a survey of 1,000 consumers conducted by the firm Piper Jaffray.

Survey: iPhone tops holiday wish lists

Appearing on CNBC, tech analyst Gene Munster said consumers still want the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and the devices remain in “tight supply.”

Despite a starting price of $649 for the iPhone 7, Piper Jaffray found that 7.2% of those surveyed have the iPhone on their wish list, making it the number one requested gift. The MacBook was a distant second, at 2.1%.

This may come as a bit of a surprise because many people have criticized Apple for removing its headphone jack from the new devices, which generated a lot of bad press.

When asked whether it’s worth upgrading, CNET’s Scott Stein told CBS News, “You can definitely wait.”

How to get an iPhone for less!

Since the iPhone 7 is a new release, you’ll probably be stuck paying full price this holiday season. It’s simply a case of supply and demand. But there are opportunities to save on the purchase of an iPhone for those willing to buy an older version.

For instance, a refurbished iPhone 6s sells for $449 on Apple’s website, a full $200 less than the iPhone 7. All refurbished iPhone models have a brand new battery and outer shell, according to Apple. They also come with a one-year warranty.

If you’re serious about saving money, you really have just a few options:

  • Buy a lower-priced phone
  • Wait for the price of newer phones to drop
  • Buy a refurbished phone

To save even more on your cell phone needs, you can buy an unlocked (SIM-free) iPhone and bring it to a compatible low-cost carrier with plans starting around $25 a month.
