Have you ever been out walking late at night by yourself and felt unsafe?

There’s an app for that!

In this article, we’ll take a look at three apps — two free and one paid — that could save your life in an emergency.

These apps can protect you when danger lurks

You can give yourself peace of mind should you ever find yourself in a scary situation simply by downloading one of these apps now.

Free options

Save Me Pro: Turn your phone into a panic button

The power button on your phone could save your life, thanks to a free app developed by a 12-year-old.

Dylan Puccetti of Galveston, Texas, developed Save Me Pro after learning about a kidnapping that took place in his town during the late 1990s.

Save Me Pro allows you to send out an emergency alert to a prearranged list of contacts simply by hitting your power button 8 times.

You can download the app for free for Android devices, set up your emergency contacts and then define what you want your emergency message to be.

If you want to pay 99 cents, there’s also a premium version that allows law enforcement to track your exact location using GPS triangulation. (Neither the free nor the pay version is available for iOS at this time.)

Trusted Contacts: Google’s personal safety app

Trusted Contacts is Google’s personal safety app designed to help you — no matter whether you just need a little reassurance walking home at night or if you actually find yourself in a real emergency.

Simply download the app and then give ‘trusted’ status to friends and family. Doing so allows them to see your activity status, and it opens a direct line of sharing between you and your loved ones.

If you feel threatened, you can share your location with your contacts.

Your contacts can request to see your location, too. If everything is OK, you can deny the request. But if you don’t respond after five minutes, your location will be automatically shared with your friends and family.

The great thing about Trusted Contacts is that it works even if your phone is offline. In that case, it will display your last known location to friends and family.

Apple users can download the app here.

Pay option

Lifeline Response: Let your thumb do the walking

With the Lifeline Response app, you’re asked to put your thumb on your screen when you’re feeling unsafe.

If your thumb leaves your phone’s screen — say during an attack — an ear-piercing sound is emitted from your phone and a message goes to agents who are poised and ready to help.

Those agents call to verify your safety and first responders instantly get your GPS coordinates.

You can also use the app to tag suspicious activity in your neighborhood and alert others nearby.

There’s a free 30-day trial of the Lifeline Response app. After that, there are different monthly charge tiers starting at $3.75 per month.
