How much is an unlimited data plan worth to you?

We’re not talking about a plan when you’re throttled once you hit 22GB or 23GB in a month, which is common among what passes for an ‘unlimited’ plan these days.

We’re talking about an honest-to-goodness truly unlimited data plan with no cap whatsoever on how much high-speed data you can use.

Some people have decided the value of that kind of plan — especially when it comes from AT&T —  is in the thousands of dollars!

Who would pay $3,000 for an unlimited data plan?!

What you might call ‘black market sale’ of the ownership of grandfathered unlimited AT&T data plans is taking place at a fast and furious pace online.

Motherboard reports that such plans are being sold for hundreds or even thousands of dollars on sites like eBay and Craigslist.

Right about now you’re probably asking, ‘Is this practice legal?’ The surprising answer is yes!

In one example we found, an AT&T Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan for iPad was being offered for $2,999.95. The auction attracted 82 inquires and 88 watchers — though no firm offers as of yet.

In another example, the same plan owned by a different seller was bid up to $1,200 from an $899 starting price — and the auction wasn’t even over yet!

One thing we should note: These prices don’t include the month $29.99 fee you have to pay to AT&T to maintain the plan once you own it.

What happens if you are the winning bidder?

Account transfer is simple if you’re the lucky winner.

The seller will typically ship the SIM card for the account along with a prepaid gift card for the account to be temporarily transferred onto while it’s between owners.

Also included will be the username and password to get into the account.

The winner is then responsible for updating the IMEI and verifying that the data plan activates properly.

Once that’s done, the winner can change the email, password and billing information on the account into their own name.

But don’t forget to pay your monthly bill or you’ll lose out on this plan!

Wait…will AT&T always honor the grandfathered $30 a month price?

That’s the big question. But here’s something to take solace in: AT&T went through expensive litigation in 2016 relating to these unlimited plans, so it’s not likely to risk another class-action lawsuit by preemptively killing them.

If $3,000 is too rich for your taste, take heart — you can still get an unlimited AT&T plan at today’s current prices.

AT&T has an ‘unlimited’ plan (wink, wink) that offers a single line of unlimited talk, text and data for $100 a month.

Of course, unlimited really means you’ll be throttled with slower speeds after 22GB!

Not to mention that $100 a month is really expensive when you consider that T-Mobile will charge you $70 for a single of unlimited data and Verizon will set you back $75 a month.

But the cheapest unlimited offer of all comes from Sprint.

Sprint starts at $50 a month for a single line. A family can get five lines of unlimited data for $90 a month, but that’s a limited-time promotion. That rate is good through the end of March 2018, at which point you would pay Sprint’s regular rate of $180 for five lines.
