Free two-day shipping is one of the main benefits of a $119 annual Amazon Prime membership, but what happens when your delivery is late?

I recently discovered that Amazon may make it up to you by extending your Prime membership for a month!

Is your Amazon delivery late? Here’s how to get a free Prime extension

Here’s what happened: I ordered a few supplies for a DIY home improvement project, but they didn’t show up by 8 p.m. the night they were supposed to be delivered.

I decided to call the customer service number listed on Amazon’s website, 888-280-4331, to find out what was going on.

Late Amazon delivery

Amazon’s customer service representative was very apologetic. She tracked the package and told me that she would email me with an update in the morning.

The next day I got an email that explained the package was still on its way.

At that point, I hit reply to politely ask if anything could be done to make up for the inconvenience. Amazon ended up extending my Prime membership by one month.

I’ve read that Amazon does this all the time to compensate Prime members for late deliveries.

NOVEMBER 2018 UPDATE: This article was originally published in 2017. When I contacted Amazon about another late delivery in November 2018, I got a $5 credit instead of a Prime extension.

How to contact Amazon about a late delivery

To reach out to Amazon about a late delivery, the first thing you need to do is visit the Contact Us page.

Below the list of your recent orders, Amazon will ask for more details about your issue. In this case, you would select “Where’s my stuff?” and “Shipment is late.”

You’ll then be given the choice to contact Amazon via email, phone or live chat.

Amazon’s Contact Us page

Amazon may not offer to extend Prime for all late deliveries, but it doesn’t hurt to contact them and ask!

Don’t want to do the work yourself? Paribus is a free service that tracks the delivery of Amazon purchases and requests compensation for late deliveries. Read more here.
