Barnes & Noble has announced a voluntary recall of the power adapter sold with its NOOK Tablet 7′ e-reader because it can pose an electrical shock hazard, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

What you need to know

About 147,000 NOOKs were sold at the bookstore and online during the past holiday season for around $50.

Now the bookseller has received four reports of the power adapter coming apart to expose the metal prongs. That exposure could, in theory, lead to an electric shock.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

The adapter bears the following markings: Model number TPA-95A050100UU and manufacture date 201610.

The model number of the NOOK Tablet 7′ itself — BNTV450 — is located on the back of the NOOK.

If you have one of these tablets, Barnes & Noble is offering a free replacement adapter plus a $5 store gift card.

All you have to do is go online and register your unit if it is among those included in the recall. You’ll then be able to print out a pre-paid UPSso you can return the adapter to Barnes & Noble.

While you’re awaiting the replacement, Barnes & Noble says you can charge your NOOK through your computer via a USB cable.
