Groceries right to your door from Publix!

For at least 30 years, people have thought there is a business in delivering your groceries to you. But nobody’s ever been truly successful with a mass market approach to home delivery of groceries outside of New York and San Francisco.

Back in July, Publix announced a limited experiment with this idea in the Miami metro area. Customers in 37 ZIP codes from Hallandale Beach to South Miami are now able to visit Instacart.com/Publix, place their order online and then get it delivered to their door.

Now comes the announcement that two new metro areas are being added: Charlotte and Atlanta.

Six new Charlotte ZIP codes ‘ 28226, 28212, 28277, 28270, 28217 and 28134 ‘ will be eligible for this service. Participating store locations so far include:

  • 1020 Bradford Plaza Way (Cary, NC)
  • 3480 Kildaire Farm Road (Cary, NC)
  • 11222 Providence Road (Charlotte)
  • 2222 South Boulevar (Charlotte)

Meanwhile, Instacart is ‘expanding its work with Publix’ in Atlanta, which the grocery delivery service calls one of it fastest-growing markets. Participating store locations so far include:

  • 11800 Haynes Bridge Rd (Alpharetta, GA)
  • 1001 Ponce De Leon Ave NE (Atlanta)
  • 2900 Peachtree Rd NW (Atlanta)
  • 1544 Piedmont Ave NE (Atlanta)
  • 1050 E Piedmont Rd Ste 130 (Marietta, GA)
  • 6615 Roswell Rd (Sandy Springs, GA)

Alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, prescriptions and age-restricted items are not available for delivery. Nor can you use printed or digital coupons at this time. All orders must be at least $10 and delivery fees may apply.

There’s one caveat here that almost goes without saying: You are trusting somebody else to pick out your produce. So if you are really picky about your fruits and veggies then this probably isn’t for you. But the convenience of not being able to go to the supermarket is something that a lot of people love.

Of course, Instacart isn’t the only player in the grocery delivery field. Other notable grocery delivery services include Peapod (Chicago, D.C., Philadelphia, most of New England) and Deliveer (Vancouver, Los Angeles, Toronto and Chicago).

The reality is traditional supermarkets are under assault from every direction. If you’re a traditional player, you have the high-end competitors like Whole Foods, the off-beat guys like Trader Joe’s, the hard discounters like Aldi and Save-a-Lot and then the national warehouse club chains Costco, Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale all fighting for your dollar.

Which means the real winner in all the turmoil is you — the consumer — as these companies try innovative new ways to grab the lion’s share of your weekly food budget money.
