Aldi’s cookies have brush with bugs

A Long Island man reportedly found a large insect baked into a vanilla wafer cookie that came from Benton’s Cookies — an Aldi house brand.

When he reported it to Aldi, Eric Sowa says his family was only offered a $5 coupon and a promise that the manufacturer would be in contact.

In a statement to the press, Aldi told reporters, ‘Our understanding is that this is an isolated incident and our supplier has reached out to the customer to investigate the matter further. We sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern this situation may have caused.’

Sounds like another case of buyer beware…of bugs!

Skip the insects, keep the savings

This gross incident not withstanding, Aldi is a favorite of Clark’s if you’re looking to save money on your grocery bill. Here are a few things you should know about the discount grocer:

• Small stores. Aldi stores are about the size of a neighborhood chain drugstore with small aisles. Less real estate means less overhead and more savings for you.
• Focus on private labels. There’s only a tiny selection of products because of the emphasis on store brands. You don’t have 10 kinds of butter, for example. There may only be one or two kinds available. Forget about the paradox of choice.
• Schedule conflicts. They have limited hours.
• Don’t forget your quarter! You’ll have to rent a cart for 25 cents, which you get back when you return it to the corral. That reduces the cost of having to pay somebody to round up carts in the parking lot and it reduces accidental dents to your car when carts roll around the parking lot.
• Aldi now takes credit cards. After many years of only taking cash select debit cards, Aldi now accepts all major credit cards.
