If you’re a regular shopper at Dollar Tree, you’ve probably seen the sign in the window advertising a $1 ribeye steak — or maybe you’ve even tried it.

But we recently discovered something interesting about this polarizing product: a lower price.

Price cut: Dollar store steak is now 33 cents

On a visit to a Dollar Tree location in Atlanta, our three steaks rang up for only 33 cents each, but there were no signs to indicate any type of special promotion.

“Yeah, these things are only 33 cents now. So your total is $1.02,” the cashier said.

Clark.com reached out to Dollar Tree via email to ask why a steak is selling for less than a greeting card, but we haven’t heard back about whether this price reduction is nationwide.

What we can tell you is that reviews of the $1 steak are mixed at best.

In one YouTube video with 1.5 million views, a man compared the Dollar Tree steak to a more expensive cut of meat, and he says the experience made him sick.

Taking a closer look at the label, the 3.5 ounce Dollar Tree steak is tenderized, enhanced with up to a 30% solution and rubbed with seasoning.

In our taste test, we found it to be rather chewy and salty.

The product is made by Stampede, which says it specializes in “custom-made, center-of-the-plate beef, pork and chicken products for the restaurant, retail and military channels.”

On its website, Stampede says its food safety programs exceed the USDA standards.
