All Costco Wholesale members must follow a new rule amid the coronavirus pandemic. Starting May 4, Costco is requiring shoppers to wear a face covering that covers the nose and mouth at all times in the club.

Children under the age of two and those who can’t wear a face covering due to a medical condition are exempt from the policy.

New Costco Policy Requires Face Masks for All Customers

In a letter posted on Costco.com, CEO Craig Jelinek said the move is a “simple act of safety and courtesy” that affects both members and employees.

“Costco employees are required to wear face coverings, and now we are asking that Costco members do so too,” Jelinek said. “We know some members may find this inconvenient or objectionable, but under the circumstances we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience. This is not simply a matter of personal choice; a face covering protects not just the wearer, but others too.”

To help slow the spread of coronavirus, the CDC recommends that Americans wear cloth face coverings in public when it’s not possible to maintain social distancing measures.

Costco notes that the new face covering requirement isn’t a substitution for social distancing at the store.

According to its website, Costco says most U.S. locations will return to normal shopping hours on Monday, May 4. Special operating hours will be in place for members 60 or older at select clubs.

For the time being, no more than two people will be allowed to enter the warehouse with each membership card.
