If you’ve been looking for a new job, you’ve probably come across a few postings on Glassdoor.
In this article, I’ll take a close look at five things to know about the job posting site including how it works, how to upload your resume and how to find and apply for jobs. I’ve used job postings sites in the past to find work and checked out Glassdoor to see how it compares.
Glassdoor is a website and app available for iOS and Android devices. It’s a great resource to use if you’re searching for jobs in a particular career field. You can apply to jobs directly on the website. You can also use Glassdoor to research potential employers and average salaries.
If you’re looking for a new job, you may be able to find it on Glassdoor. Here are five things to know before you start applying:
Below, you’ll find more detailed information on Glassdoor including how it works, how to find jobs and what you can expect once you’re hired.
Glassdoor is an employment website that launched in 2008. Since then, it’s grown into one of the most popular job posting websites with more than 55 million unique visitors every month according to the company. You can check out a full timeline of the company’s history online.
Glassdoor claims to be worldwide leader on insights about jobs and companies, and the company says its site includes more than 110 million reviews, salaries and insights about 600,000 companies.
Glassdoor is completely free to use. Anyone can create an account, upload a resume and use the site to apply for jobs. You can also look up specific companies, read ratings and reviews, research salaries in your industry or geographic area and prepare for interviews. Glassdoor offers additional free resources online including a blog and career guides.
Glassdoor compiles thousands of job postings, reviews and salary information into one easily searchable platform. Anyone can search for job postings, specific companies or salary information and apply to open positions. You can even upload a resume to your Glassdoor profile so that potential employers can find you.
To begin, visit Glassdoor.com and create a free account. You just enter your email address and create a password to get started. You will have to create an account to search for and apply for jobs, so it’s best to do this right away. Plus, you’ll most likely be applying to multiple jobs, and having an account makes it easy to save your resume, keep track of where you’ve applied and communicate with potential employers.
Glassdoor also has a “Give to Get” policy, which states that, in order to have unlimited access to the website’s content, you must submit your own contribution consisting of either a company review, interview review, salary or benefits review. Once you post any type of review on Glassdoor, you’ll get 12 months of unlimited access to the website’s content.
Once you’ve logged in and made your contribution, you can begin searching for jobs. Glassdoor is a great place to search for and apply to jobs in addition to researching companies and salaries.
You can use the tabs across the top of the page to navigate the website. Choose “Jobs” if you’re looking for open positions, “Companies” if you’re researching a specific employer, “Salaries” to research average incomes and “Interviews” to see common interview questions in your career field and/or area.
When it comes to security Glassdoor says that your information is protected and says that any reviews that you write will be completely anonymous. To learn more about how Glassdoor protects your information and anonymity, check out the company’s Privacy Policy and member anonymity promise.
You don’t have to pay to use Glassdoor because employers pay to list jobs on Glassdoor’s sister site, Indeed, and those job postings also appear on Glassdoor.
Glassdoor also makes its money from search advertising: Employers can pay more to get their job postings ranked higher on the site.
Once you’ve created an account on Glassdoor, be sure to finish filling out your Glassdoor profile. This will make it easier to apply for jobs online and can help you to stand out to potential employers. You can upload your LinkedIn profile, upload your resume or fill out your profile manually.
After you’ve filled out your profile and/or uploaded a resume, you can start applying for jobs. Here’s what you need to know about each step of the process.
When you’re ready to search for a new job, visit Glassdoor’s homepage or click on the “Jobs” tab. You can enter job titles, companies or keywords directly into the search bar at the top of the screen from any page.
When I checked out Glassdoor, I searched for “Writer” along with a location. You can enter “Remote” as the location if you’re looking for a work-from-home job. That’s what I did here:
When you click “Search,” you’ll be able to see job results, company results and salary results for each job and location. You can click on “See all jobs” to look for available positions.
From there, you can narrow your search results further by job type, date posted, salary, location, company ratings and more. You can also sort your results by most relevant or most recent.
When I searched for remote writing jobs, 3,094 postings came up, so filtering and sorting the results can really help.
As you browse the job postings, you’ll see the job title, company, location, date posted and more. You can click on postings that interest you to see additional information including company ratings, highlights, insights, descriptions, overviews and more. You can also read reviews of the company written by current and former employees.
Once you’ve found a job that you’d like to apply to, click “Apply Now.” In some cases, this button may say “Easy Apply.” These are jobs that you can apply to directly on Glassdoor’s website.
If you’re able to apply directly on Glassdoor, you’ll be able to fill out your information and choose a resume from your computer or Glassdoor profile. There may be a couple of additional questions from the employer, and you’ll have the option to sign up for email alerts for similar jobs before applying.
If a job that you’re interested in doesn’t have an “Easy Apply” option, you may be redirected to a company’s website or Glassdoor’s partner website, Indeed, to apply for a job. To learn more about how to apply for a job on Indeed’s website, check out our guide.
Job applications vary from one employer to the next, but most will require your contact information and a resume. No matter how you apply, once you’ve completed the application, you’ll be able to review everything before submitting it to the potential employer.
After you submit your application, the next step is just to wait until you hear back. Of course, you can always apply for more jobs in the meantime to increase your chances of getting hired somewhere.
According to Glassdoor, qualified candidates usually hear back within a week.
If you find a job posting on Glassdoor that directs you to Indeed to apply, potential employers may also contact you through Indeed to follow up. If this happens, you’ll also get an email alert.
If you’re using Glassdoor to research a company or salary, you may find that not all of the website’s information is immediately accessible. You don’t have to pay anything to unlock Glassdoor reviews and salary information. Instead, you just need to create an account and provide some basic information.
To unlock Glassdoor reviews and salary information, you can sign up for a free account. Once you’re signed in, you’ll be asked to rate a company you’ve worked for in the past or currently work for, write a review, describe the interview process, provide your salary information or write a benefits review. This is a part of Glassdoor’s “Give to Get” policy.
The “Give to Get” policy states that, in order to receive unlimited access to Glassdoor’s content, you must submit your own contribution. According to the website, this ensures that Glassdoor has enough reviews to share with the community. It also creates more accurate company ratings to help other job seekers.
When you post any type of review, you’ll gain unlimited access to Glassdoor’s content for a full year. Once the year is over, you’ll be asked to submit another contribution to renew your access.
You can unlock Glassdoor reviews by submitting a Glassdoor review yourself online.
If you’re thinking about using Glassdoor to find a new job, here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind:
In addition to these Glassdoor-specific tips, be sure to follow general job application etiquette. Take the time to update your resume to stand out and showcase your skills. Also, consider updating your LinkedIn profile and other professional social media accounts as well.
Finally, be ready for a job interview. If you’re applying for a remote job, follow these tips to prepare for a virtual interview.
Ultimately, Glassdoor is a great way to find new job opportunities and research potential employers/salaries. Glassdoor is always free to use for job seekers. You will have to create an account and provide a review of your own to unlock unlimited access to all of Glassdoor’s resources, but it’s easy to do and helps to keep the website’s information accurate and up-to-date.
While you’re looking for new jobs, be sure to check out a variety of platforms. You may find job postings directly on company websites or on social media platforms like LinkedIn. In addition to Glassdoor, be sure to also check out a few other job posting sites like Indeed, FlexJobs and Upwork.
No matter where you decide to apply, take the time to update your resume. Finally, be sure to avoid common work-at-home job scams. For more details on scams targeting job seekers, visit Glassdoor’s website.
