State-by-state map shows how much a ticket increases your car insurance

Nearly 94 million people will hit the roads for the year-end travel season from Friday, December 23 to Monday, January 2, 2017, according to AAA.

So when you’re out there driving, remember to slow down… particularly if weather conditions are bad! Nobody wants to get a speeding ticket or worse — wind up in an accident of some kind.

But if you do happen to get that ticket, here’s how much you can expect it to jack up your auto insurance…

How much your insurance goes up if you get a ticket

NerdWallet has put together this handy chart that illustrates the average amount your insurance will go up by state for a speeding ticket or a DUI.

That average increase is 62% across the nation for a DUI and 14% for a speeding ticket.

Some states are worse than others, of course. Speeders in North Carolina will face an average 62% hike in their insurance rates, while those caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol will face a whopping 368% increase on average.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have Louisiana. Intoxicated drivers in the Pelican State will only face an underwhelming 17% increase on average.
