Most people understandably don’t like shopping for insurance. But Coverhound makes it easy to quickly enter your info and get real quotes online — without having to talk with an insurance agent over the phone.
For this Coverhound review, I got quotes for both home and auto insurance. You can see the prices I was quoted here or read about my full insurance-shopping experience below.
Coverhound is an online insurance agency that works with multiple top insurers. The site can help simplify the insurance shopping process, particularly for home and auto coverage.
Shopping for insurance on Coverhound is easy. After entering some basic info, you’ll get your quotes online in just minutes.
Best of all, you won’t be getting estimated premiums; you’ll get real, actual rates right from the carriers that Coverhound represents.
In this review, I’ll show you how to shop for both auto and home coverage.
To get started, you’ll need to enter the following info or answer the these questions:
As opposed to entering much of that info manually, Coverhound can obtain the data from DMV with your permission. If you agree, you also give them permission to access information about your credit history, driving record and insurance claims history.
To identify discounts you may qualify for, you’ll also be asked to enter the following info or answer the these questions:
Following that, you’ll enter your home address and email address. You’ll also have to input any driver incidents over the last five years, if that applies to you.
And that’s it. You’ll get your quotes for auto insurance in less than a minute or two after submitting the required info.
The process of getting a home insurance quote is a bit easier than getting an auto quote because it requires you to enter less information.
To get started, just provide the following info and/or answer the following questions:
Upon entering that info, you’re immediately served with four quotes online — but be ready for the phone to ring.
While I didn’t hear from anyone after requesting an auto quote, I did receive two follow-up phone calls in two days and a couple of emails from a licensed Coverhound agent after requesting my home quote.
Coverhound offers a fairly broad range of property and casualty insurance. In addition to home insurance and auto insurance, they also quote for the following lines:
In addition, Coverhound also offers a variety of business insurance policies like cyberinsurance, commercial auto insurance and more.
Finally, if you’re interested in term life, Coverhound directs all inquiries for those policies to Policygenius. You can read our full review of that service here.
Coverhound is licensed to offer all insurance products in most U.S. states and Washington, D.C. However, it won’t quote you for rates on personal lines (home, auto, renters, etc.) in Alaska, Hawaii, and Massachusetts, according to the FAQs.
You can find state licensing info here.
Coverhound works with a variety of companies, depending on the kind of insurance you’re getting a quote for.
For auto insurance, I got quotes from Progressive, Travelers, Mercury, Safeco, Bristol West and Nationwide.
When it came to home insurance, I was quoted by Safeco, Mercury, Travelers and Nationwide.
In addition, Coverhound says it works with the following other carriers on personal lines:
Auto and home insurance are the kinds of things that a lot of people don’t pay much attention to in their financial lives. But shopping these two policies can often save you hundreds of dollars a year.
While you can save even more by bundling your home and auto through the same carrier, I shopped the policies separately on Coverhound.
Here are the prices I found.
When shopping for auto insurance on Coverhound, you’re asked to select from four potential levels of coverage: Minimum, basic, superior and deluxe.
The exact dollar amounts of coverage vary by state, but this is what I was offered in my home state of Georgia:
Primary Liability
Uninsured Liability
Additional Coverages
And here are the actual quotes. The most affordable option in each category is bolded:
Carrier | Minimum | Basic | Superior | Deluxe |
---|---|---|---|---|
Progressive | $84/month | $103/month | $129/month | $159/month |
Nationwide | $117/month | $120/month | $134/month | $154/month |
Bristol West | $186/month | N/A | N/A | N/A |
Safeco | $196/month | N/A | N/A | N/A |
Travelers | N/A | $105/month | $130/month | $149/month |
Mercury | N/A | $107/month | $137/month | $164/month |
As a point of reference, this quote was obtained for a widowed 44-year-old male who owns a home, has a master’s degree, excellent credit and one speeding ticket driving a 2020 Toyota Corolla in Atlanta, Georgia.
When it comes to home insurance, here are the quotes I got:
Carrier | Monthly Premium |
Mercury | $47.58 |
Nationwide | $66.16 |
Travelers | $72.83 |
Safeco | $100.83 |

Coverhound makes it easy to get insurance quotes online. Best of all, it serves up real insurance quotes from the carriers they work with. These are not estimated premiums that could change when you go to lock in the policy.
If you like the quotes you get, you can buy the coverage directly online. The only drawback is that I was hounded with follow-up calls and emails on the home insurance side – but not for my auto insurance quotes.
