Least expensive cars to insure

For the second year in a row, the Honda Odyssey LX tops the list. Minivans can be cheap to insure because they earn high safety ratings, according to the study.

In addition, they’re primarily driven by parents who tend to be cautious drivers — the kind insurance companies like.

Taking a look at other models on the list, we noticed there are quite a few SUVs and trucks and not as many compact or family sedans as you might expect.

Here are the 15 cheapest vehicles to insure:

1 Honda Odyssey LX $1,112
2 Jeep Renegade Sport $1,138
3 Jeep Wrangler Black Bear $1,148
4 Honda CR-V LX $1,170
5 Jeep Compass $1,183
6 Subaru Outback 2.5l $1,187
7 Jeep Cherokee Sport $1,188
8 Buick Encore (tie) $1,190
8 Jeep Patriot Sport (tie) $1,190
10 Subaru Forester 2.5l $1,196
11 Ford Escape SE $1,203

Insurance costs for all 15 vehicles came in below the national annual average of $1,605.

This list of the least expensive cars to insure is made up primarily of family vehicles, not luxury and sports cars. The study found those are the most expensive to insure.

Other factors that impact auto insurance rates

Aside from the vehicle you drive, your personal insurance rate will vary depending on many factors, including the following:

1. Location
2. Gender
3. Age
4. How much you drive
5. Years of experience
6. Marital status
7. Driving history
8. Coverage limits
9. Credit history

The more you shop, the more you save

To make sure you’re getting the best coverage for the best price, shop around as often as every six months!

A lot of people wait until the end of their policy period to compare rates, but there’s no reason to wait until then — especially if you think you’re paying too much.

If you switch during the middle of a policy term, you can just request a refund from the insurer you’re leaving.

“It’s a great idea for you to shop around for your auto insurance. The more you shop, truly, the more you save. Based on each individual situation, different insurers are going to treat you differently,” Clark said.

Before calling the insurance companies to do this comparison, have your current policy, driver’s license and your vehicle’s VIN handy to speed up the process.
