Wegmans, one of the largest supermarkets in North America, recalled 1,125 pounds of chicken products that were produced without federal inspection. The USDA listed this recall health risk as ‘high,’ or ‘class 1.’ Wegmans grocery stores are located in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The following chicken products were affected:

  • Approximately 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Italian Flavored Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of 1/24/2016.

  • Approximately 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Brown Sugar Barbecue Seasoned Chicken Breast Cutlet” with a use-by date of 1/15/2016.

  • 3-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wegmans Garlic & Fennel Whole Chicken Roaster” with a use-by date of 1/13/2016.

  • 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Wokery Sherry Chicken 27482” with use-by date of 1/13/2016.

The products subject to recall have the characters ‘EST. or P-7567’ inside the USDA mark of inspection. A class 1 recall is defined as having ‘a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.’ But, as of yet there have been no reports of any illness resulting from the recalled chicken.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the problem was discovered after it conducted a review of records and found that Wegmans changed its production schedule, and consequently the chicken was produced outside the approved hours of operation.

Customers who purchased any of these chicken products can return them to the store where they were purchased and receive a full refund.

Consumers with questions about the recall are advised to call Wegmans Consumer Affairs Department at 1-(800)-934-6267, ext. 4760.
