Frito-Lay, Miss Vickie’s bags included in jalapeno chip recall

The Food and Drug Administration reports Frito-Lay has voluntarily recalled select Jalapeno Flavored Lay’s Kettle Cooked potato chips and Jalapeno Flavored Miss Vickie’s Kettle Cooked potato chips because the seasoning on them may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The measure follows on the heels of a supplier’s recent recall of a seasoning blend that includes jalapeño powder.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, and may even be fatal in young children, frail or elderly people. In rare cases, Salmonella can cause more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis if it gets into the bloodstream.

Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported stemming from this particular recall and no Salmonella has been detected by Frito-Lay in the seasoning used for its chips.

Still, the company is recalling the following products out of an abundance of caution.

Individual bags

Look for a “guaranteed fresh” date of JUL 4 or prior on the front of the snack.

  • Jalapeno Flavored Lay’s Kettle Cooked potato chips
  • Jalapeno Flavored Miss Vickie’s Kettle Cooked potato chips

Multipacks

Look for a JUN 20 or prior use by date on the exterior of the multipack package. Also look for a “guaranteed fresh” date of JUL 4 or prior on the individual snack’s bag within the multipack.

Note: Other flavors included in these multipacks are not included in the recall.

  • 12 count Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Sack
  • 20 count Frito-Lay Bold Mix Sack
  • 30 count Miss Vickie’s Multipack Tray
  • 30 count Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Tray
  • 32 count Miss Vickie’s Multipack Box

If you have any of these potato chips, you can return them to the store for a refund. Visit JalapenoChipRecall.com for more info.

Finally, we should note that Jalapeno Cheddar Flavored Lay’s Kettle Cooked 40% Less Fat potato chips are not included in this recall.
