People across the country are going to Ulta Beauty stores late at night to dumpster dive for free makeup.

The disturbing trend is documented on YouTube. There are dozens of videos from young people, mostly teens, who show off the thousands of dollars worth of products they got for free.

Ulta dumpster diving: What you need to know

The discarded beauty items from brands like Clinique, Lancôme and L’Oréal are often used tester products.

Shelby, known as Shelbizleee on YouTube, says she dumpster dives a few hours after the store closes to avoid being caught, though she insists dumpster diving is not illegal.

During one haul alone, she says she got $2,000 worth of items, which she either keeps, gives away or sells online.

WFAA-TV in Dallas reports that police recently found two teenage girls digging through an Ulta dumpster after they claimed they heard about it on social media.

Responding officers gave the girls a warning, but they could have been cited for trespassing.

In a statement to WFAA, an Ulta Beauty spokesperson said the company is aware that some people are choosing to dumpster dive for damaged, used and expired products.

Ulta says the makeup is thrown out for a reason and it should never be retrieved or used.
