Fireworks, parades and parties are an integral part of Independence Day celebrations. While the festivities are fun for humans, the spike in activity can be frightening for your pet.

How to keep your pet safe on July 4

Here are four notable holiday threats along with tips from the American Veterinary Medical Association to help keep your pet calm, cool and collected this Fourth of July.

Loud noises

Whether you’re taking your pet to a parade or hosting a party at home, loud noises — especially fireworks — can startle and provoke animals to run away. It’s important to ensure your pet’s identification tags are up-to-date and keep current photos of your pet in case of an unexpected escape. You can also consider getting your pet microchipped by your veterinarian so you have a better chance of getting your pet back if it gets lost. The best option is to keep your pet in a safe, quiet room at home.

Toxic food and beverages

Holidays come with a smorgasbord of delicious food and beverages. Yummy for us — sometimes toxic for pets. Remember to keep the treats and drinks — especially alcohol — out of reach, and discourage guests from feeding the scraps to your pooch.

High heat

Summer heat can be dangerous for both humans and animals. If you’re off to a parade or festival, bring water and check for shady areas to rest. Again, the best environment for your pet during a noisy holiday celebration is in a safe, quiet room at home.

Dangerous debris

Periodically check for debris in your yard. Even if you didn’t shoot off fireworks, litter can still make its way into your yard and tempt your pet to chow down.
