Big hiring at Dollar General

Dollar General has announced plans to create 10,000 new jobs in 2017.

The jobs will come from 1,000 planned new store openings, plus the opening of two new state-of-the-art distribution centers.

All told, the massive hiring spree will increase Dollar General’s work force by 9%.

‘Dollar General looks forward to welcoming new employees who want to grow with us as we expand throughout the states we serve,’ said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer.

‘These new jobs reflect the organization’s commitment to seize growth opportunities and further deliver Dollar General’s value proposition of everyday low prices on quality merchandise.’

Despite the name, Dollar General isn’t actually a bona fide dollar store.

With 12,719 stores in 43 states, Dollar General prices about 25% of its products at $1 or less. But it distinguishes itself from the pack of dollar stores out there by selling a lot of name-brand products at a variety of price points above $1.

Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Unilever, Kellogg’s, General Mills, Nabisco, Hanes, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are just a few of the names you’ll find in the aisles of your local Dollar General.

Meanwhile, Dollar General is making a play to reach millennials in metro areas with a new store format that’s hip, young and fresh.

The discount retail chain recently announced the launch of a concept that’s being called DGX. The thrust of these 3,400 square foot spaces will be to marry Dollar General’s traditional merchandise with a quick-serve mentality much like a gas-station convenience store. There will also be an emphasis on delivering an easy checkout experience.

So you’ll be able to pick up grab-and-go sandwiches and a drink from the soda fountain or the coffee station alongside merchandise in the home, electronics and seasonal categories.

The first DGX stores — set to open in early 2017 — are slated for Nashville and Raleigh, North Carolina.
