Just the other day, I saw a $1 “buy one, get one” deal on shoes from Kmart where you pay full price for your first pair and get a second pair for just a buck.

Sweet deal, right?

But what happened next was even sweeter.

Kmart’s sneaker deal goes to a needy recipient

Needing a new pair of sneakers, I decided to jump at the $1 BOGO deal. The cheapest pair of men’s sneakers that qualified for the $1 BOGO deal were $19.99, so that’s the pair I got.

The second pair for $1 brought my subtotal up to $20.99, but I was still below the $25 minimum for free shipping at Kmart.com.

So I threw in a 3-pack of athletic socks for $4.99 and, boom, I just crossed the free shipping threshold.

(Editor’s note: This deal has now expired, but Kmart tends to run the $1 BOGO deal every so often. So keep your eyes peeled!)

The shoes came a few days later and I brought them in to show my co-workers. Christa, our General Manager, asked me if I planned to use both pairs. Truth be told, I didn’t have an immediate need for two pairs. So Christa suggested a worthwhile idea that didn’t occur to me.

“Let’s go find someone who’s really in need of those shoes on the street or at a shelter and give them away,” she said.

I was all in!

After our weekly editorial meeting, we walked one block from our office and found a man sitting in a bus kiosk keeping dry away from the light drizzle.

We asked him his shoe size, and it turns out he was a perfect fit!

The man was very appreciative and I’m glad to have shared this deal with him. Given Clark’s history of charitable work, I’m sure he would approve, too!

See below for an unboxing and review of the $1 BOGO sneakers that was shot before we got the idea to give the shoes away:
