Are you sitting on a lot of old media like books and CDs that you think your friends or family would love to have?

There’s a cheap way for you to mail them a big box of stuff no matter how far away they live in the United States!

The USPS Media Mail shipping rate

For years, when libraries or schools needed to move materials around the country, they did so at ultra-low costs with ‘library mail’ rates.

As individuals, we are not privy to this super-cheap shipping offer. But we can get the next best thing — ‘Media mail’ rate!

‘Media mail’ is a special shipping rate the United States Postal service offers when you as a private citizen want to send educational materials.

The following materials can be shipped at the discounted media mail rate.

  • Books (at least 8 pages).
  • Sound recordings and video recordings, such as CDs and DVDs.
  • Play scripts and manuscripts for books, periodicals and music.
  • Printed music.
  • Computer-readable media containing prerecorded information and guides or scripts prepared solely for use with such media.
  • Sixteen millimeter or narrower width films.
  • Printed objective test materials and their accessories.
  • Printed educational reference charts.
  • Loose-leaf pages and their binders consisting of medical information for distribution to doctors, hospitals, medical schools, and medical students.

There are some exclusions to note — comic books don’t qualify, nor do video games, computer drives or digital drives of any kind.

Here’s a quick list of some common price points for the shipment of books, CDs, DVDs, etc. at media mail rates.

Media mail — Retail large envelopes & parcel prices

Max weight (lbs.) Price
1 $2.63
2 $3.12
3 $3.61
4 $4.10
5 $4.59
6 $5.08
7 $5.57
8 $6.05
9 $6.53
10 $7.01

Pricing goes up from there, with the cost maxing out at $35.81 for a single media mail package of less than 70 pounds. (Anything over 70 pounds can not be shipped at the media mail rate.)

Your package will take anywhere from two to eight business days to arrive to its destination. But for the ability to ship it anywhere in the country, you can’t beat the price!
