In a news release, the automaker made the historic announcement Wednesday that every Volvo it launches from 2019 on will have an electric motor.

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” said HÃ¥kan Samuelsson, Volvo president and chief executive.
Volvo’s portfolio of electrified cars will include both electric and hybrid vehicles.
The company said it will launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021; three Volvo models and two from Polestar, Volvo’s performance brand.
There will also be a range of plug-in and mild hybrid options available on all models.
“This is about the customer,” said Samuelsson. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”
The automaker said it hopes to sell one million electrified cars by 2025 and reduce carbon emissions.
