Toyota is recalling an additional 1.7 million vehicles worldwide for potentially faulty Takata air bag inflators.

The latest move adds to a massive ongoing multi-manufacturer recall campaign that began three years ago in response to the potentially deadly part.

A look at the latest Toyota airbag recall

The recall of dangerous Takata air bag inflators in vehicles that are still operating on roads across America just keeps growing.

On January 9, Toyota announced the expansion of the ongoing recall would affect 1.3 million vehicles in the United States alone. The remaining 400,000 involved in this recall are elsewhere around the world.

Here are the affected vehicles in the U.S.:

  • 2010- 2016 4Runner
  • 2010-2013 Corolla and Matrix
  • 2011-2014 Sienna

In addition, the new recall also includes Toyota sub-brands like Lexus and Scion:

  • 2010-2012 Lexus ES 350
  • 2010-2017 Lexus GX 460
  • 2010-2015 Lexus IS 250C and 350C
  • 2010-2013 Lexus IS 250 and 350
  • 2010-2014 Lexus IS-F
  • 2010-2015 Scion XB

Meanwhile, this move by Toyota comes on the heels of a similar announcement by Ford, which recently said it was recalling 953,000 vehicles worldwide for Takata inflators.

Defective Takata air bags can explode when the air bag deploys, causing serious injury or even death.

Twenty-three deaths worldwide have been linked to their malfunction, with 15 of those deaths happening here in the United States.
