If you’re shopping for a car, you may be able to save a lot of money by looking at vehicles that sell slower than average.

American vehicles and luxury SUVs are the slowest-selling used cars, according to a new study by the automotive research firm iSeeCars.com. Hybrid and electric vehicles typically sell the fastest.

New report: These are the fastest and slowest-selling used cars in America

The findings are based on an analysis of more than four million used cars (1 to 3 years old) that were sold in 2018.

Although the average late-model used car takes 46.4 days to sell, certain used vehicles stay parked on dealer lots for a lot longer than that. Here are the slowest-selling late-model used vehicles under $25,000:

What does this mean for car shoppers? If you choose to buy a vehicle that’s been sitting on the lot for a long time, there may be more wiggle room on the price.

“It’s important to know how long vehicles stay on dealer lots because slower-moving cars can present negotiation opportunities for consumers,” said iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly. “Cars that remain on market for longer than average indicate that supply is higher than demand, which could mean the pricing is too high or that the car isn’t as well-liked as its competitors.”

As for the cars that sell the fastest, iSeeCars.com reports the top five are the Toyota Prius C, Tesla Model S, BMW i3, Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt.

Of course, you don’t want to buy a car based solely on the ability to negotiate a better price. Always check ratings and reviews (Clark likes Consumer Reports) to make sure you’re getting a reliable ride.
