Hyundai is voluntarily recalling nearly 63,000 midsize cars in the United States due to an issue with sunroofs that could increase the risk of a crash.

The recall involves model year 2015 and 2016 Hyundai Sonata sedans that are equipped with the panoramic sunroof option. The automaker has received several reports of the glass sunroof panel detaching, but it’s unaware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the defect.
Here’s how Hyundai explained the problem in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
The sunroof assembly incorporates a wind deflector at the front of the sunroof to reduce wind noise in the passenger compartment when the sunroof is open. Certain vehicles may have insufficient bonding of the wind deflector anchor plate. If the wind deflector becomes partially detached from its mounting points after the sunroof is opened, it can interfere with the moveable sunroof panel while the sunroof is being closed. The tempered glass sunroof panel can detach from the sunroof assembly due to interference with the wind deflector, or if the customer tries to force the sunroof panel closed.
Starting in early December, owners of the recalled vehicles will be notified by mail with details about how to arrange an appointment for a free repair.
